Can you guys help me out with some info on this range?  Cost for an afternoon sighting in and shooting a .300 win mag?  Any hidden costs besides the range fee?  Cheyenne Mtn tries to make you buy one of their target stands and has a ban on 300 win mag and higher apparently.  Need some help being a newbie in town.  Thanks in advance.

$10 for one person, $16 for two, for all day.  Bring your own ammo and targets.

He will happily sell you a variety of targets, or bring your own.  You might bring a staple gun, though they do or did give out push pins.

Cash only, I thought it was 18 bucks for two but it could have changed.  Typical range rules, do not go into the office with a gun, leave them in the vehicle.  Make sure all guns are unloaded when going to the range, follow the rangemasters directions.  If you like 100-200yard shooting, there is a less crowded range on his property.  Ask them how to find it when you pay.  Its off the driveway as you come in, by the zombie cars.

You can only pick up your brass.  If you head down range to change out your target before picking up your brass, you will not find them when you return because the range master and/or assistant "clean" the range during cease fires.  The range is descent, but needs upgrades.  No overhead cover on rifle ranges.  Other than that, range time is always fun time.

He has pallets, lots and lots of pallets.  People stand them on end, sometimes bracing one behind the upright one, to help it stay up.  Hence pushpins and staple guns.  He tried making target stands out of rebar some years ago, they got shot up pretty quickly.

Back to Cheyenne Mountain Shooting Complex--yes, they will sell you target stands.  You can go to their website and get instructions/dimensions on building your own stands that will mate up to their mounts.  Might save you a buck or three.  I never heard that they have caliber restrictions on .300 winmag and above.

Thanks.  Yeah I didn't realize it either until after I had paid, then the guy behind the counter asked me what I was shooting.  After I told him he proceeded to list off a host of other rifle calibers not allowed because of the SpecOps guys having choppers going in and out.  I got a refund but told him it would have been nice if they posted these restrictions somewhere at the facility or on their website.  Nowhere can I find these restrictions.  I ended up getting a refund but it still pissed me off that if you have restrictions that they aren't prominently posted EVERYWHERE.  Some of the calibers he listed that I can remember were 300 win mag, 300 ultra, 338.  Apparently 300 WSM is fine though....

That's why I haven't wasted my time down there at that range.  Most of my rifles that I had before the canoe tipped over and sank were restricted, including the 300win, 300rum, and 375H&H.  I'll go to dragonmans and plink away at the extended range.  Less clowns on that side as you'll find a little more serious group shooting.  You can park right by where you shoot, and you don't see clowns needing babysitting there.

Rampart gun range?  The range has been closed for years now due to an incident that happened up there.  Rampart road itself is closed at Garden of the Gods since the Waldo fire, and likely will remain closed for a while still.

They do have caliber restrictions.  More to do with the area they shoot into than the range itself.  The Small Arms Impact area of Ft. Carson has limits by range control as to what can and cant be fired there, as they take into account SDZs and the size of the impact area.

Dragon Mans was ok, but honestly for the amount of money he takes in, I really wish he would invest more in the range itself.  For a cash business it raises some red flags to me considering how packed that place usually is on weekends.  Honestly, I dont mind buying the targets at CMSC as they encourage you to reuse them.  Its much closer to where I live and the range has much better facilities and options.  I like being able to shoot out to 1k too

I think it was a mistake to waste resources on building a 1k yard range, or plans to at least in an area restricted to sub-magnum rifles.  Yeah there will be a few guys out there with 308win precision rifles shooting, and a few nut jobs with their 30'06 deer rifles trying to show off to their friends, but you're blocking out a large segment of long range shooters.  Dragonmans could stand to do some updating, and I wouldn't be shocked if he does in the future.  I personally don't expect much other than a place to shoot a bullet down range, a chair to sit in, and a table to shoot off of.  He has all of that, granted it is not a five star resort.  I'm a gun owner, reloader, and a shooter, I don't need cushy chairs, a pretty club house, and special tables to make ragged holes on a target held by a specially made target holder.  I rather it be primitive to test, and push my skills.  Now I would like him to create a longer range than 200yards, and some better bathrooms for the women folk.  As for his cash business, who cares.  If he doesn't want the hassle of credit cards and their charges so be it.  He's a local business, I'd rather give him my cash than give it to big brother at their "public range" that doesn't let you really shoot long range guns.

You actually don't find that many magnum calibers at long range matches.  6mm, 6.5mm, and 7mms rule the roost.

Hopefully one day Frontier will get off their asses and put a pile of dirt at 1,000.  They have only been saying they are going to do it for 5+ years...

Its not like there are to many other ranges offering the same distance.  Im just excited because it opened a few weeks after I got my AR10.

Dragonmans isnt horrible.  The problem is its pretty far out of my way, and shooting off cable spools is a subpar base for shooting.  Its uneven, half of them wobble, and on top of that, the furthest I can shoot at the range is a range that I dont even really need optics for (not trying to sound cocky, but Im used to hitting the 300m target with iron sights).  I would go there on weekends and every lane would be full.  Hes raking in thousands of dollars and yet his range set up honestly comes off as stuff that would otherwise be thrown out as industrial waste.  If hes not willing to invest money into improving the range for customer satisfaction, Im not going to waste the half hour it takes to drive out there.  Especially if there is a nicer, longer, significantly more versatile range ten minutes from my house.

Its his range, its his call.  Hes just not the only game in town anymore.  If he wants to compete, hes going to have to re-invest some of his money to make the sales pitch.
