Just got myself a 2 Way Radio to use with my buddy on the slopes and a Camelbak pack to put food, layers of clothing and water in while skiing. Gift cards ftw. I'm amped to hit the slopes!

I know Winter Park/Mary Jane had them but the price went up.
Loveland sells them for cheap @ the shows ($100?) and they're fully unrestricted. Don't know about others but they end these sales sometime next month. Quoted:

Well.... Guess I better start to consider thinking about learning to snowboard _MaH fixed it for ya Oh, I know how to snowboard, rather well, in fact. But it's been a few years, and I'm still tired of walking across flat, or even somewhat uphill portions between the top of a lift and the top of a slope. The only alternative is to dismount one foot, and do this obnoxiously retarded "one-foot-shuffle". No, time to expand. Time to learn to ski. Which will be difficult, considering how well I've done with "single board systems" (skateboard, snowboard, wakeboard) and how spectacularly I've flat-on-my-face-failed on "multiple-board-systems" (roller blades/skates, skis, water skis). I have that South Park episode "Asspen" stuck in my head now... "Pizza, french fries, pizza, french fries." "Okay, did you see that? He french fried when he should have pizza'ed. If you french fry when you should pizza, you're gonna have a bad time!" So, as a heads up, if you see an older looking guy in a class with a bunch of young kids, it's just me trying to catch up on about 20 years of education. Heck, my daughter might even be with me. Is 3 years old too young to start learning? Seems like it to me... _MaH Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Speaking of snow, I left the house this morning and, lo and behold, there was snow dusting all of Pikes Peak. Really - it was gorgeous.
A few hours passed, and it was all gone. Wasn't it around this time last year (maybe a bit later in October) that you all got NAILED with the worst snow ever in recorded Colorado history for October? Any idea if that will make another appearance? _MaH Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Slopes-2-Shores, what do you do at ABasin? I run a groomer. They tried blowing snow last night; and will have success tonight Think Snow!!!! We're ready. -JC Very cool and I really think some days about quitting the rat race and doing something like that. I once met a forest service guy that cut/kept fire roads clear on a D-9 Cat all summer, blew up frozen beaver dams and worked Crusty Butt ski season... Been jealous for years! Running a groomer has to be interesting given the hours and I personally would love to hear some of the stories. Good news is we have an "insider" here now! B2 BTW Slopes-2-Shores log out/log in Anyhow, stories appreciated. How's the new "Pali" lift or whatever they're going to call it? Hint to our NEWBs: Loveland and A-Basin had pow days late last April... Both are great and if nothing else go out and look for a Colorado GEMs Card before it's too late! |
| The ABasin Facebook page has a video of the load test on the new lift. |

Thanks B2,
There's not really any interesting stories. There is some great scenery though. Springtime sunsets from the top looking west and sunrises over the East Wall are pretty nice, as are full moons. I'm not much of a groomer skier either, but I do sample my product for quality control. The new lift is replacing Exhibition - not Pali. Pali will be the same well loved lift. The new lift is the "Black Mtn Express" or BMX - and is a detachable quad by Poma. The ride is 2.9 minutes compared with Exo's previously 7-9 minute ride. All of the tests are going well on it and it will be ready to go by the time the skiing starts. It's fast. In addition to the new lift we're getting a new cat too !!! Snowmaking is going well and now we just need it to stay wintery. I think maybe winter has arrived and is staying. I however, won't be there untill December. Log-in/Log-out ????? I'm not sure what you mean by that. Is it a Timothy Leary reference? Anyway, ski season is almost upon us and the High Country is anxious in anticipation. Think Snow !!! -JC |

Wasn't it around this time last year (maybe a bit later in October) that you all got NAILED with the worst snow ever in recorded Colorado history for October? Any idea if that will make another appearance? _MaH Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile Around October 11 or 13, 1984, there was a blizzard during a Monday night football game between the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers, IIRC. Got up the next morning to three feet of snow on the ground in Colorado Springs; they had four feet out at Fort Carson. The Broncos scored twice before their offense ever took the field. The storm made such an impression on viewers around the country that for years afterwards Denver had a reputation as Snow Town. ETA: Took a look at a 1984 calendar, it was on October 15. Here's a blurb on the game: Blizzard Bowl, Oct. 15, 1984
Colorado's ski resorts couldn't have bought better publicity. On Tuesday morning after perhaps the biggest blizzard ever broadcast, they were swamped by reservations around the nation, all from football fans who watched the Broncos beat Green Bay 17-14. More than 60,000 fans braved the blizzard that blew through Mile High Stadium that night, obscuring the field and leading to a sloppy game. How sloppy? The Packers fumbled on the game's first two plays, and the Broncos returned each fumble for a touchdown - Steve Foley going 22 yards on the first, Louis Wright 27 yards on the second - for a 14-0 lead before the offense ever took the field. It remains the only game in NFL history in which a team's defense scored on the first two plays from scrimmage. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4191/is_20021111/ai_n10010183/ |

It was dumping this morning up high according to my GF. I wouldn't know first hand- I'm in R.I. right now. It's not snowing here, but it is high tide. The Basin may be ready for the weekend, if not it will be for Mon. They're a little hesitant to start with a new lift on a busy weekend in case there are any glitches. But the season is on the cusp of beginning.
I'm glad and already am ready to be back there. -JC |

Wasn't is around this time last year that there was a crazy ice storm in the Springs too? I remember driving to Old Chicago after the storm and going 20mph the whole way for fear of losing all traction on the road Many years ago, my DH and I were driving from Godfather's Pizza on the west side of CS to my apartment off North Academy. We drove through every type of weather you could possibly imagine, and some of them more than once. Hail, rain, snow, fog...you name it! |
