Ok, so i hear a lot of conflicting stories about Left Hand. Is it still open? I hear from the news that they took away shooting rights, but then I talk to my neighbor last night and he was up there last weekend shooting and he even talked to a ranger that had no problem with them shooting. Also, it's not like he was plinking with a .22, he was out with his new AK.
I was just wondering. I really want a place to go shoot that i don't have to be a member. I've heard a lot of stories about LHC, both good and bad, so I was also hoping for some input. Is it even worth going up there? |

I was just out there last weekend to help get a Jeep out of there and there were signs that said no shooting. The area a buddy told me they used to shoot was thrashed like no other, and posted no shooting. It looked bad, i mean real bad.
That was my first time up there, so not sure if that holds true for the entire area or not. That place is always so crowded and draws the yahoos from Boulder and the college, i wouldn't waste my time there anyways.....but to each his own. |

Tons of people would bring random garbage up, shoot at it, and leave it. Well...it might be time to just join a gun club. Edit: I did here that they are having a cleanup effort this weekend. BBQ to all that show up to help clean it up. |

On a side note I would have expected that you as part of the Magpul bunch have the inside skinny on some reasonably private and safe shooting areas. It surprises my that you would consider Lefthand. I just wanted clarification of it being available or not. Thanks to your pictures, I don't want to shoot anywhere near that place. Holy crap I didn't know it was that bad! I've never been up there, but have heard stories, and apparently those stories are all true. Thanks! |
| We are still able to shoot in the rest of the national forest around that area right? I stopped going there pretty quickly and found a few other open spots past Jamestown that were on public land. All that should be fair game though. If I'm wrong let me know. I was planning to go up after finals this week. |
| Geez everytime I go up there there are a ton of Mexicans. Once I saw this Mex guy pointing his rifle down range. looking through the scope as his kids changed the target.. The others were clueless on firearm safety shooting at boulders, with no regard for ricocheting. Last time I was there, someone shot up a bunch of garbage with shotguns, and left the mess. Funny there was an address on the box... I wouldn't mind cleanning it up, but it would be back to the same condition next day I think... |

I looked on the forest service website and they have a thing about lefthand on there. only a small area is closed. there is actually a spot farther west that is still good to shoot on. |

I think just about person who has been there has some kind of horror story. Its not much of a place to shoot in terms of comfort or ease (or safety). You shoot up at a huge hill. Placing targets is nearly impossible. A lot of very very immature shooters go there. We did our best to pick up after ourselves and sometimes even others.
My horror story was a guy brought his brand new bolt 30-06 up in the new box and all. Set up a little target 30 yards away against a big rock. We got the hell out of there. Shot there twice and thats plenty. I am most likely going to try to shoot at pine where there is not as many loonies. It is still open but I dont suggest anyone go. |

I actually saw a group of shooters all the way at the end of the area continung to shoot their ARs while a guy was going up to put targets out, we whistled and yelled but they kept on shooting.
The group below us was 5 Goth girls and one fat goth guy all with AKS of some sort, they were shooting a scoped RPK at a target 20 yards away. We bailed... |

I haven't shot there for 2 years because of reckless shooters.
A few weeks ago a buddy of mine witnessed a few dummies(CU students he guessed)in flip-flops with some pistol grip pumps fanning the other shooters. Some rangers, standing out of view, saw this and made them put down there guns. They proceeded to chew them out, and as punishment, made them clean and pack out trash. Like I said, I don't shoot there anymore, but someone is on the right track. Let's hope this spot gets better. |
