Did you guys like the one in South Denver versus the Springs?  I could probably do another one mid-late January.  Personally, I just need to park 2 rifles...

Count me in.

Silly me, I bought an RPK kit without learning about them. The receiver I pressed won't work so I gotta order one from NDS for that build and then find a regular parts kit so AKM receiver doesn't umm, go to waste.

I have a better idea what I'm doing so now I can do a build that doesn't look like Curious George got into the liquor cabinet.

Knogman, there is an 80% solution to that build.

I already sent off an order to NDS for a complete RPK receiver. The minus is that it cost more but the plus is that it's an NDS receiver and NDS will throw in a FCG set. The parts look way better than my Romy grade C kit but the bore isn't as good. I got really lucky with that kit.

I wonder if I should order one of those AKM kits with the chopped barrel for the AKM receiver I already have. How hard is it to find a US made barrel? I don't think anyone makes one at this moment.

Can the M70 be built on a flat or does it need a milled receiver?
12/27/2008 8:47:05 AM EDT
[#15]
A stamped M-70 can be built off a flat but the Yugos used a 1.6mm thick flat instead of 1mm like in the AKM.

Here's the Yugo flat:

Yugo Underfolder Flat

and a regular flat:

Regular AKM Flat

You can see that the front trunnion area on the Yugo flat is different; it probably needs a special bending jig.

I would be 100% up for one of these:

problems:

I don't have an AK kit or a receiver and I don't know how to build them whatsoever.

I really want a M70.  would like to get an all black underfolder but wood foregrips would be okay as long as it is an underfolder.

please let me know what I need, what the cost is going to look like, if you guys would be willing to show an AK noob how to build one and also when the build party would be.

thanks guys!

Well, I'm in as long as someone has the jigs for either an M70 or a Tantal. I can bring propane for the grill and the park tank, a few bucks for park chemicals or drill bits, and some junk food.

Hell, there's a Tantal bending jig on the EE for $185 shipped. Anybody want to split it 3-4 ways?

ETA: Anywhere in Denver in late January works for me.

We have bent AK builder flats for Tantals on the regular bending jig. I am not sure what the mods that were do to the jig to make it for Tantals?

The 100% (I would recomend Nodak Spuds)
Pros: are the fastest less problematic way to build an AK. With limited tools and a de-milled kit you can build something that you can take to the range that afternoon of a build party.
Cons: have to be transfered though a FFL. Cost more.
http://www.nodakspud.com/page2.htm NDS-4 at $85
The 80% flat (Tapco)
Pros: Not run through an FFL. Least expensive receiver
Cons: One was ran though the regular jig at the last build party and I have not heard feedback as to how that one went. It may work, but it really requires a jig that is not common and I know of only one in the Springs and I am not sure it I can get it on loan to us...If there is enough interest I can check into it.
http://www.copesdistributing.net/product_info.php?cPath=32_34&products_id=383 Tapco $29
 The 80% prebent (ColdSteelSolutions)
Pros: Not run through a FFL. Can by built with out a bending jig
Cons: There is a 3-6 week back log on these. A little more money than the flat but still a lot less than the 100%. Probably the most labor intensive solution.
http://shop.coldsteelsolutionsincorporated.ieasysite.com/productinfo.aspx?productid=YUU064 cold Steel Solutions $40.

Depending on when the build party will take place, the coldsteelsolutions looks like the way to go.  If anything, I could order it now and wait till the next build party.

I don't mind paying the extra money for the novak spuds receiver either if it will end up being less problematic.

I guess next thing is:  Is the link for the M70 yugo underfolder kits the one that will fit these receivers?  Are they still available at that price, or does anybody have one for sale locally?

I appreciate the help.

You are loooking for a "matching" parts kit for a "stamped" receiver. The kit listed by Kong will work. Not sure if any locally are available. I would also try to call Apex. They will sometime list kits listed as out of stock if they are getting low on them (to make sure that they are not going to "over sell" there inventory.

okay, I will try calling them tomorrow.

those receivers will allow me to build the underfolder that I want, correct?

I have a couple AKs already but the romanian ones and they are nice since I refinished the wood and cleaned them up, but I would like something a bit better.  I can tell the quality isn't as high as most AKs.

thanks and I'll see what I can put together.

at the build party's, are there the riveting machines (or whatever you need) and any other tools necessary to build one of these up, or am I looking at buying some tools as well?

Yes with a bunch of work it will build an underfolder. Like I said, the cold steel solutions is the solution that takes the most work. None of the holes are drilled into the receiver. It is a shell only. An underfolder is the most difficult build (compaired to your Romy's for example), specifically in the area of the rear trunnion, there are multiple holes to be located and drilled. If you are really good with hand tools it is time consuming, but do-able. The Nodak receivers are top knotch if you have never built an AK before and you are looking for something special in this build then I would go that way.

sounds good, you conviced me on the nodak nds-4

I will go with that and will call around about the parts kits.

Is there anything extra I am going to need, like US grips or triggers or springs etc, or maybe the rivets or small parts like that?

Tools are covered within the group. You will need:
1.  a rivet set
2.  5 additional compliance parts (your receiver counts as one)

I am built several AKs and helped others build many more. I got a hold of really nice fixed stock Yugo kit in super condition. I could have went any of the above mentioned routes but decided in the end that I wanted this one to be special. I went with the Nodak receiver and as I wanted to keep this looking like a real Yugo I chose compliance parts to keep the weapon looking correct on the outside. I picked the receiver (1), FCG (3), Gas piston (1), slant break (1). If you don't care about that but would like it to look new then you could substitute the grip (1) and the upper and lower hand guards (1) (U.S. made wood from Ironwood designs) for the gas piston and the break.

I have no idea. I just received via mail a new Romy AK barrel from them. They're not close to where I live so time and gas wise I didn't even think of going.

ETA: I suppose I could have taken the 1 hr drive to go there but I think they're mail order only. Their website doesn't list store hours or any location other than a PO box.

Most likely the party will be for guys that have already started a build, or want to prep for refinishing (blasting cabinet to prep for park/norrels/alumahyde/etc).

The build party's around here are usually every couple of months.  Usually down in the Springs, because that's where the guys with all the jigs, presses, etc. live.  We (LonghunterCo and I) put one on in Littleton in November and it went really smooth.  Still looking at the schedule for another one up here, then probably a couple more this year just down in the Springs.  It's really up to whoever wants to host it.  If you've got a location and are willing, contact LonghunterCO or myself for who has the jigs, presses, welder, etc.
