I'm in the market for a new toy.  My budget is limited (<$1000, ideally around $800), so I'm looking at a handgun for now.  I'm somewhat set on either a S&W 629 in 44mag, and about a 6" barrel... or a lower end 1911.  As much as I would like to "get both", it's not in the budget.

I do not have any pistols in either caliber, and I do not have any revolvers.  I have shot a 629 before and really enjoyed it.  I like the idea of the 44mag, and I've heard whisperings that semi-autos may be in jeopardy under the new NOBAMA administration, and figure a revolver may be a good investment.  1911's seem to be a "must have" for most gun owners, their reputation speaks for themselves, and I'd like to add a 45cal to my small, but growing family.  Figured I'd ask the hive...

What say you?

That's a tough one.  I have both, and shoot the .44mag more.

I guess you really cant go wrong with either, but like you mentioned, the semi auto 1911, if it happened, would be the first to get banned of the two.

Plus, if you wanted, you could carry the 1911.

ID look at the Springfield Armory 1911s if you decided to go with a 1911.  dont think either would be a bad choice.

+1

I just picked up a Colt Gold Cup and a Springfield TRP.

Supposedly the Springfield Armory Loaded is a pretty sweet gun.

Can't go wrong with a revolver.  Interestingly enough, some other fellow from Colorado is trying to get rid of one.

IMHO as far as low end 1911's go, I can't say that I am a fan, every low end 1911 I have shot had reliability issues.  YMMV

Thanks everyone!  Still kinda sounds like a toss up.  I just showed the wife each, and she just tossed in a vote for the revolver.  I'll take a look into the springfields though...

Thanks again!
