I have a relative visiting here in Minnesota that lives in Denver. He would like to ship an AK home, but is uninformed as to the legal aspects of this transaction. If the AK were shipped to an FFL in Denver, would he need a purchase permit to pick it up, or do you guys run em as a long gun out there...? Thanks.

I do believe that Denver has an assaut weapon ban.  So he may want to look into the legal problems there, first.

Denver likes to pretend it is like other large cities and more important than the state government.  Their bans are tough for the locals to keep current with, since relevant state law is easy to understand and pretty good for us, and everything Denver tries has to go through the courts.  Fuckem, cross a dotted line on the map and you are outside of their nonsense.

Jensen Arms up in Loveland is well worth the drive.  map there are many closer but I don't visit them enough to be familiar.

The key is to double check that each state does not have a problem with your planned purchase.   Then check about shipping it back by common carrier (FedEx says an individual may only to ship to a licensee in its policies, I don't know about other shippers off the top of my head).

Even if you think you know the answer to any of the above info, it is best to look it up and make sure.  Just browsing through the MN law they have some specifics for evil black rifles.

The feds leave it up to the States, here is a portion of the ATF firearms FAQ page.

(B2) From whom may an unlicensed person acquire a firearm under the GCA? [Back]

A person may only acquire a firearm within the person’s own State, except that he or she may purchase or otherwise acquire a rifle or shotgun, in person, at a licensee's premises in any State, provided the sale complies with State laws applicable in the State of sale and the State where the purchaser resides. A person may borrow or rent a firearm in any State for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes.
