Ok folks, I appreciate all of the help upto this point.

I am bringing my family down at the end of the month for a vacation.

My wife is born and bred Alaskan as is my daughter.  We dont have fireflies in Alaska and neither have ever seen a firefly, nor will they ever in Alaska.

What are the odds of them being able to see fireflies?  I am willing to drive to make it happen

Thanks
Chris

i haven't seen any in 23 years that goes from denver north to almost the wyo border. back east we called them lighting bugs.
of course different climate areas of the state might have a few

I have only seen them once in my 30+ years in Colorado. I suspect some took a wrong turn.

The enviros tell us that lightning bug populations are way down because of pesticides and sprawl.

I remember seeing them in Ohio all the time in the 70's.

The can be seen South of Colorado Springs. The Fountain Creek Nature Center. I'm not sure on the times of day, or times of year, but we saw them there last year on a nature hike.

Hi Sung
Good to see you

Any advice you can offer, I would be glad to have

My wife and 3 yo daughter will be joining me in CO from 5/25 (evening) through 6/1

We are trying to jam as much possible into this short time frame, needless to say the zoo(s), aquarium, Pikes Peek, Water World are all on the list.

We will probably hit an area, stay the night, see the sites and move to the next area and so on.

Again, any insight from anyone is much appreciated.  We dont get to travel together often, so I want to maximize the experience.

well, i was going to suggest a bunch of dramatic scenary, but you live in alaska, so that's probably not going to be all that cool to you.

Does the mint still give tours?  That was pretty cool, not sure if they still do that after 9/11

there are some great restaurants around, although don't order seafood (you don't see any oceans around here. :-) )

You can take a tour of Coors Brewing, that's pretty cool (Golden)

Elitchs (6 flags) is fun (esp with kids), school won't be fully out yet either, so a weekday won't be packed.

We don't have very many lightning bugs here on the west slope that I've seen either. But the last time I was back to southwest Nebr in the summer the evening skies were filthy with them. I had a great time teaching daughter to catch them.

Since your from alaska, pikes peak may be something to scratch off, if you run out of time.  I was going to suggest Estes Park, but its pretty much the same deal.

Care to share?
That is an easy enough drive from Denver, I would do it in a heart beat

NE corner of River Bend Ponds on the north side of Prospect.  Exit I-25 at Prospect, go west to Summit View, turn right, take Summit View to Cherly, turn left. There is a parking area on the left down the hill. It's a pretty big and nice natural area with lots of waterfowl to view also.

There arent any down there really, are there?

you're going to exit @ 269B (hwy 14 west bound) which is the next exit north of the prospect exit as they are once again tearing up prospect. but since i've avoided prospect since before the work i'm not exactly sure if its west or east of summit view

Yes I've seen them with my own eyes. Some years there isn't as many as others though.

I forgot Prospect is closed, the area is West of Summit View.

Just took a little drive, and out by the water treatment plant (the backside - no pun intended ) there was this really neat little Raptor exhibit.  Had a few golden eagles, bald eagle, a horned Owl, couple other things, really really neat, completely stumbled upon it.  I'll look up how I got there if anyone is curious.  It was somewhere off on ziegler.

Just went to the firefly place on ziegler.  Didnt see any there, was there from about 8:15 to 8:45, walked the trail.  Maybe too early in the year?  I dunno.  On a side note, though, there was a "killer deer" there - someone has obviously been feeding this huge mule deer doe.  I was glad I was packing because it actually got about 15 feet from us, ears up, aggressive acting.  Any closer and I probably would have pulled the trigger.  It was pretty weird.  Saw some ducks, heard some geese, pretty nice and quiet.  Watch out for the killer deer.  lol

I'll go check it out tonight.  We havent ever seen fireflies either, so it would be cool.  Do you think its too early in the year?

I believe that fireflies prefer a habitat that is more humid than Colorado affords.  I've never seen any here but farther east where its more humid in the summer they are common.
