Just got back from taking my form 1 to the Douglas County Sheriffs office and was told "we don't sign those here". My question is, where can I take this to get a sign-off? Anyone have a contact name? Perhaps a Judge? Someone who is gun friendly. Haven't tried the State Patrol yet, I guess that might be an option. Some help or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks |

You have to get it signed by the CLEO (chief law enforcement officer) of the jurisdiction you live in. That would be the County Sheriff, or if you live in the city limits, the Chief of Police. I don't think anyone else has the authority to sign off for you. And sorry, the State Patrol doesn't count. This is the first I've heard of Douglas County not signing off. |

I basically hit a brick wall with the Douglas County Sheriff. I'm not ready to give up yet though. I have a call into another sheriff's official, and I'm going to send an email to the sheriff himself. So we'll see what happens. BTW rumor has it that Colorado is getting a new top cop. Part of the Homeland Security deal and he is supposedly 1000% pro gun. Don't know what the time frame is. Could be very interesting. |

Others who can sign a Form 1/Form 4: State Police Captain or equivalent top district officer. District Attorney or judge of a court of general jurisdiction (jurisdiction over your address, and ability to charge you with a crime). Federal Agency Special Agent In Charge or equivalent of a field office with jurisdiction over your address. US Attorney with jurisdiction over your address. Some others if none of those pan out, and you can always skip the signature by forming a corporation or LLC or the like. |

Circuits - Appreciate the suggestions. I thought about the corporation route, haven't ruled that out yet, but seems like a lot to go through. I haven't actually talked to the Sheriff of Douglas County yet, just underlings, so I will try that. I've contacted the State Patrol, but have been told they definitely will not. Not sure how to go about finding a judge who is gun friendly, may have to look more closely at that. Somebody in Douglas County has got to be signing these damn forms. The problem is finding out who. I've contacted the BATFE in DC to see if they kept some kind of list and they don't. Will keep plugging away. |
Yeah, I've been told that the Coroner can sign. There are still a few avenues I can check out. I have a call into the NRA to see if they keep some kind of list of friendlies. Also thought about the CBI. Lancelot - That's not exactly the kind of news I want to hear, but I do appreciate the effort. I'm still not ready to give it up yet. If it's not to be, then it's not to be and I'll just have more $ for ammo. But still not ready to admit defeat. |
You're right, they DO know. However, the problem is, they are not going to give out these names/contacts for fear of pissing them off and possibly losing a very valuable commodity. Let me just say this, IF I do get a name, that name and the name of the person that gives it to me will be held in the strictist of confidence. |
