Heard on the news on my way into work that there was an explosion in Port Orchard that someone who was a mile away said sounded like a sonic boom.  Anyone know anything else?

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. - A powerful explosion destroyed a home south of
Port Orchard early Tuesday morning, and two people are missing in the
aftermath of the blast, officials said.

Emergency crews responded
to the scene, off Ramiller Lane in south Kitsap County, just before 5
a.m. after receiving reports of a loud explosion.

The blast was so
powerful it completely leveled the home and blew out windows at
Mullenix Ridge Elementary School, some 1,000 feet away. Intense flames
broke out in the home immediately after the explosion. There were also
unconfirmed reports of damage to other nearby homes

Kitsap County
Sheriff's Office spokesman Scott Wilson called the explosion
"disastrous." People five to eight miles away from the blast site have
been calling KOMO News to report that they heard it and felt it.

A
witness told KOMO News that he heard faint cries after the blast, but
he was unable to get there due to the intensity of the fire.

Mullenix Ridge Elementary is scheduled to open despite the damage to the windows.

The
U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 2.8 magnitude earthquake at 4:40
a.m., shortly before reports of the explosion started coming in to the
newsroom. it's unclear whether the two incidents are connected.

Ramiller Road is closed to traffic in the area near the explosion until further notice.

It woke me up this morning about 5 minutes before my alarm clock.  I live about 6 miles away straight line distance and I am not a light sleeper.

I think with meth labs it's much more common to have solvent-fueled fires, not kabooms. The newest drug-related explosions tend to be related to hash oil extraction, apparently it requires large amounts of butane to process.

I don't know if there is any natural gas service to that area.. Could have been a propane explosion, gas kept in a shed next to the house, etc. Who knows? The area just south of Long Lake where it occured is a bit shady.

News report I read said the on scene fire commander described the house as a pile of popsicle sticks.  apparently it is completely leveled.  Blew out a few windows at a school about 1000 feet down the road and part of their fire sprinkler system fell down.  That's a big boom.  my guess if I had to make one was hash oil.

It was an older couple in a triple wide.

I talked to a plumber I know that lives nearby around noon.

The people he talked to seemed to think it was oxygen as there is no natural gas at the house.

At first they reported the couple was missing until the search dogs started finding parts.

They reported pieces of vinyl siding driven through trees too.

Sounds exactly like when the Pizza Place here in North Bend blew up (natural gas leak), but I doubt O2 would do that.  Far as I understand, O2 - even an environment with heavy pure O2 saturation - would have burned really hot and hard rather than detonating.

O2 doesn't explode, it isn't flammable but it will accelerate any other fires around it.  Not saying O2 wasn't involved but it wouldn't be the source.  If there was no natural gas or propane at the home then I have no idea what it could have been.

If there was a gas leak in combination with an older person's medical oxygen, that would sure make for a powerful explosion.

There was discussion of a propane explosion, except they found the propane tank intact.

Oxygen alone won't do that, I know.

I was hearing everything third hand so it probably got lost in translation.

A least one of the couple was using oxygen though and it might have been a contributing factor.

Doesn't mean much.. A leak into the home doesn't mean that the tank would explode

Even if the propane tank was intact, if the propane leak was at the stove, or the propane fireplace inside the house, when that gas combined with the oxygen, the vapors inside the house could blow up and leave the tank outside intact.

"The blast is no longer a criminal investigation. Three days after the explosion, a cause was released on Friday.
Initial conclusions indicate that a propane leak of propane from gas piping on the east side of the home allowed gas to accumulate under and within the residence. "

Propane caused the explosion.
