yet another PDN update PA isn't on the way from any base to another. They do make training flights that circle the peninsula, seeing blackhawks, chinooks, and kiowas are not that unusual. Only this was in the middle of the night, at fairly low altitude and over a populated area. |

Meh, Crashhawks and Shithooks fly over my house at night all the time, prolly 500 agl or lower. It's the sound of freedom, that bitch would have shit herself if she lived near an AFB that had an interceptor squadron during the 60's and 70's. BTW a pair of F106's in full afterburner at 3:00am will shake things off the wall. |

Or if she was in Seattle and saw a convoy down town on one of the most fucked up days for traffic. Took me 2.5 hrs to drive 11 miles. Sober |

I remember when San Francisco city council was considering banning the Blue Angels for ripping over Market St during fleet week. They just hated the sound of freedom, but bet your ass they were so happy to see fully armed F-16's circling the Bay Area when they couldn't find that hi-jacked airliner they thought was heading there on 9-11.
Whatever, If that happened over my house I would be outside sitting in my lawn chair lobbing cold beers up to 'em... |
Hmmmm, I'm used to it as I've lived on base in the past. Elmendorf AFB was famous for hitting afterburners over our post constantly. Hells bells, the Post Commander of Ft. Rich complained about it and still, those flyboys still did that shit. Used to piss us off to no end as we were trying to get our weekend safety briefing out in formation, and they had to keep delaying while we stodd at parade rest waiting for the flyboys to get done with their show..... Being the high speed Airborne Unit we were, (young and dumb) some ADA guys got a wild hair up their ass and some dumbass took a stinger and locked on to one of the planes...... Yup, that went over like a fart in church........ They left the airspace though.....As far as this though, I'd be pissed if there were low flying aircraft over my house scaring up horses, etc... I can see both sides here as well as the SOAR guys need the practice to keep our SOCOM guys safe but at what cost? I certainly don't trust our military to honor their oath. Some will, but the young and brainwashed I don't count on...... |

Some will, but the young and brainwashed I don't count on...... That's exactly the point. The army could at least have warned about the training, mostly if they were planning low passes over a populated area. As for the .mil following the Constitution, things like this make me wonder also. What was the point for them doing that? Just to show they can do as they please? So, did Cesar cross the Rubicon with his legions already?
People forgot so fast what happened 70 years ago when soldiers "were just following orders"? |
Meh I saw the 60s fly by my house just a little south of Hwy 101 and I heard the Chinooks. I just wish they would have notified dispatch or EOC command. It is not a big deal but rotorcraft and spotlights mean one thing to me and that is "containment". I would be a tad worried if dispatch could not tell me why there were several helos in the area running what looked like a containment operation. .Mil failed to brief but the Mayor is a pretentious twat of the highest regard. FU Cherie, but if you need help to look for the broomstick I would assist for the novelty |

The CO of the Coast Guard base gave the Army dudes permission to use the base.
Neither the Coast Guard or the Army told the Mayor of Port Angeles what was going on. http://www.king5.com/news/local/Port-Angeles-mayor-says-JBLM-should-have-warned-city-215398871.html I think too much is being made of this.
|
|
Remember: It is easier to apologize than to get permission.
Clearly, they wanted to run an operation or test, and figured that the above dictum would help them out. They got what they wanted, and only had to say "Gee, sorry," I wonder if anyone got demoted, sent to the stockade, or discharged? That might convince me that they really did want to make sure it dosen't happen again. "Hey, Bill, don't do that again (chuckle)" isn't much of a reprimand. |

I've seen these Chinooks to late night flights over Covington near Lake Sawyer, and during the day as well. They're incredibly loud at the low altitude they're flying. How do you know these where those Chinooks? That's why the Airborne jump out of them. |

There are a couple bigger issues here:
1) conducting military training over civilian population. Considering accidents probability and consequential casualties, this should be avoided by all means. http://foxnewsinsider.com/tag/chinook-helicopter-crash 2) if the .mil will disturb the city, the minimum consideration would be a warning explaining why they need to conduct such training. This leads to 3. 3) unless someone here knows the CO who authorized the training and can vouch for his personality and the guy is a standup person with high moral values, I am inclined to think he is just one of the kenyan's drones who will embark people in trains when his master tells so and this "exercise" was just to show that, based on 1 and 2 above.

Most of us do not and should not have to expect them to play Invasion USA in our backyards at any time of day, let alone the middle of the night. This is why we have set aside millions of acres for them to train on. Mayor is overreacting. |

I do, and we're in agreement that you must be retarded. And the only thing more comical to that unit than the "oh teh noes!!!!one!!!" over-reaction of the "mayor" of P.A., is responses like yours. Seriously, drugs are bad, mmmmmmmmmkay? |

Yes. .mil behaved recklessly and showed no consideration for the city's population, to say the least, and the mayor overreacted with that "terrorized population" thing. Just demanding a (very good) explanation and reassurance of advanced notification would suffice. However, risk is still there and the justification better be very good. |

Military birds flying from one military base to another on a training flight is not even close to "playing Invasion USA in our backyards". It is not reckless and you can be damn sure considerations where made in the mission planning and risk ass. for possible effects on civ pop. What they didn't expect was people being so goddamn retarded. Honestly if you find this upsetting I'd say double wrapping that tinfoil hat, I'm guessing you'd shit all over your keyboard if knew about all the training that takes place. |

The helicopters, which he described as “heavy, military helicopters,” were “spotlighting in town,” he said, adding that they circled the city for at least an hour beginning at about 11:30 p.m. So, you mean the pilots got lost on the way to the base and had to circle over the town for one hour while flying low? I'm glad Port Angeles is a very small town. Something bigger and they might run out of fuel searching for the LZ.

| I love watching helicopters ,planes , subs , spaceships etc but not over my house for an hour near midnight with spotlights gleaming like I'm in Oakland . Oh wait I did enjoy it after my initial paranoia went away and I went back to enjoying my beer and watched the show . I didn't have to get up for work the next day or have livestock going batshit crazy like many people did. Was it stupid ? Yes . Was it the big deal it was made out to be ? Yes for some . Could it have been handled better ? Yes . The Mayors job is to run her city and keep it's populace happy so why is she being flamed for making a stink ?Is it robotic military responses or do you really feel shes a bitch for doing her job ? |
