I just finished modeling my part and generating the NC code for the Haas VF-2 in the machine shop. I present to you, the first ever billet aluminum clock face bearing the AR-15 bolt face to ever be produced at Western Washington University. It is my final project for ETec 322.

http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa210/VikingKarl/AR15ClockFace-1.jpg

I'll be running the part on Friday morning. Pics of the finished clock will be posted in a few weeks, after finals are done and I can go pick it up from the professor.

And will there be a "left handed" version????????

Mirror image in a CNC is almost too easy.

The lab fee is $100, but I'm sure that if I paid for the additional material and could book the machine time, I could make a lefty version. Or more right handed ones...

This (more or less). I'd mirror it in the CAM software rather than try to do it with the mill.

Or one could be very cautious about pissing off certian folks that have issues with any perception that you're making money off of their site, site logo, or a product that encompasses any portion thereof that they are inclined to feel that they should be compensated for. As I mentioned in my IM to you, it has happened before.. copyright infringment or Trademark infringement issues.....meaning you should really take any discussions involving the exchange of money to IM.

Edited for the big brain and shithouse lawyering Shanky provided. Fair enough?

That's the way I read the title too...    I was thinking, "Sounds like a well thought out plan."

It's not the ARFcom BFL, so I fail to see how any copyright infringement issue comes into play. The bolt face profile on my project is based partly off of measurements taken from my own bolt, and the fact that I wanted to leave gaps between the bolt and the other parts so that they didn't run together during machining.

According to the patent office no one owns the bolt logo trademark. The only trademark ar15.com owns is the ar15.com trademark; and further more according to the trademark office that trademark is DEAD(as of march 21 2009. AR15.com As such him making that would not infringe on anyones copyrights. UNLESS they filed the bolt logo under a trademark. You show the bold logo to anyone that has owned an ar15 and they will just tell you it's a bolt logo only ARFCOMMERS would tell you that it's an arfcom thing.

Didja notice Kolat's comment? There's a reason for that comment.

Now having said that....Good Luck! I'll watch from here

Oh I know that. I thought you were saying it cause of some legal standpoint you thought they had. But you are right. Besides it's not like he's making money off it.

Nice! I'm looking forward to seeing the final piece. What are you going to use for the hands? A firing pin and a takedown pin maybe?

The center of the discussion at hand is the idea that I would start producing these clocks and using ARFcom to market them. I intended to illustrate in one of my previous posts that this project cost $100 (the course lab fee), and that if I were to make a variation of it (a 'lefty' version) or others like the example I posted, I would have to pay for the additional material and such. This is not the case though; I intend on making just one, and keeping it for myself. My original intent was to post my final project so people could "ooh" and "ahh" for a bit and so that I could answer people's questions about the process.

I'm just using whatever comes with the clockwork mechanism the lab assistant or professor gives us to start. Maybe if I get more ambitious, I'll try something like what you've suggested.

Use a bolt for the hour hand and a firing pin for the minute hand

I would think a firing pin and a cartridge to continue the motif.

Mark Larue's products do not belong on something as awesome as my CNC'd clock, though I have thought about adding rail sections to the sides. In all honesty, it will likely remain like my AR; no rails, bare bones, as simple as it can be.

UPDATE:
Here's the finished part/assembly of the CATIA model I posted earlier. When I output the NC code from CATIA, my G54 location was in the wrong location, so I had to compensate for that in the shop by reorienting the part and doing some math. I screwed up my math, and as a result, the circular pocket on the front face (where all the engraving is) is off center by a little bit. I filled the engraving in with a Sharpie so it would photograph better, but its kind of shitty looking, so I'm going to remove it and fill it with paint instead.

Is the recess that off center or is it just the angle in the second pic?

I'm asking is it as WAY off as it looks or is it just the angle?

It is about .01" off center. It looks like a lot though, even in person. I'm kind of bummed about it, but its not really noticeable unless someone is really checking it out.
