....between a pistol ar lower and a standard ar lower...figure I should have a clue before I pick up a blank....I think I want to build a pistol ar?

There is no physical difference....just that if it starts out as a rifle, it can't ever become a pistol....or maybe it's the other way around, I forget...either way, it can't go from one to the other, but can go from the other to one

Physically nothing.  Unless you have one that is engraved pistol to make you feel better about it.
You can go from a pistol to a rifle, but never the other way.  Once a rifle always a rifle.

A pistol lower has never had a shoulder stock attached to it. After a shoulder stock has been attached it will under definition of WA state law be either a rifle or a weapon made from a rifle, if this includes a less than 16" barrel it will be a illegal (In WA at least) short barreled rifle whether the shoulder stock is still attached or not.
