Things are slowing down at work and we are expanding, so I am tasked with building a weld fixture, it is 5'X10', 1 1/2" steel square tubing frame with a sheet of 3/16" steel on top.  I talked the guy down from using a sheet of 1/4".  He didn't think a 10 gauge top would be stiff enough.   What heavy monstrosity will this be supporting?  4X10 steel fence panels to put on top of a bulkhead.  Looks sort of like this one:

I just do what I's told.

Tomorrow when I am done, it will probably just be tossed (sort of, aprox. 750 pounds) in the steel recycle dumpster.

I'll suggest you expand on that story, . . and that you suggest expanded steel first thing in the morning, with maybe 1" tubing.

WTF indeed?

We always slow down around this time of year, and we need the space incredibly bad.  Finally got rid of all the temps yesterday.

Its already done, Tomorrow I should be done with all the fence.

I like working at a magic place, when business slows down, it expands.

Plus when you get rid of temps, more space is needed.

The only way this makes sense to me is if it's a magic business

P.S. say ... where again is this dumpster the 750lbs of steel is going to be tossed at?

I like magic business.  Dominant company, niche market.  When we get slammed with orders in the spring, we want to have space to have some stock built up so we can keep up.

The dumpster will be out front, 6 foot high, 8'6" wide 20 foot long, good luck.   The aluminum dumpsters are kept locked up.

Just in time for nationalized healthcare, card-check, and cap & trade!

Agreed. Build what they say to build.

It's only 106 days.

Does your company just do fences or do they do other iron products? I'm considering having a metal spiral staircase built.

Neither.
We make stuff for the .gov, we are expanding so we can have more room for inventory.  The fence is my little side project for the new retaining wall, yay me.

That does look nice, but I don't think it's going to be a very good retaining wall.(?)

If it were me, I'd just get a sign made; "Walking on walls is strictly prohibited!", with some fancy legalese speak and RCW numbers in fine print below.

Exactly the same strategy, but slightly less effective on the laziest of criminals. The courts will surely agree

Too bad those bars will function as excellent climbing handles in the meantime.... until some juvenile gets a body part stuck in them anyhow. Then you'll need a portable welder to go fix 'em. Job security?
