currently i dont have an AR style rifle. What do i want it to do, uh well bust out hardcore "Heat" style for starters...
im really not that interested in an Ar that will be for much more than 100 yards. I have bolt guns for going beyond that. It would probly wear irons for simplicity as well...

Go with a 223/5.56, if SHTF it will be easier ammo to get,............ maybe.

I have 308, 6.8SPC and 556.

I much perfer the 556 for ammo, if you don't handload it is the only choise. 308 has gotten sky high. 6.8SPC is $1 per round for SSA. The 6.8 is fun to shoot but it pretty much drops like a rock after 250 yards. My A1 clone is dead assed accurate out to 300 yards even with my old eyes and standard sights.

If you don't have an AR yet, start off with something in 5.56, then go exotic.

Id go 5.56 with a 22lr kit for general plinking. I think the 22lr kit was one of the best investments I ever made for my 5.56 rifle (until I decided to make a dedicated rifle out of the $200 kit).

Like mentioned before, if you dont already have one, go 5.56.  If you do, I say go .308.  Anything more exotic than that and finding ammo is tough.  SHTF, better chance of finding the right stuff.

5.56.

for cats drop in the RF conversion, screw on the muzzle can, and load up some subsonics.

5.56mm

Get a working gun first that you can break in, wring out, and know works when you need it to.

Whle all ammo is expensive, 5.56mm is still common and easier to get ahold of then nearly all the other calibers put together.  It's also much cheaper then the other calibers, thusly allowing you to get more range time and shoot it more.

After you get your basic "working" rifle built, then start playing around with your future builds.

Just think of all the firepower you will have - 300 instead of 30 shots per magazine!  Ammo is cheap too!

Those are pretty good slams, guys!

Actually, when I signed up for a membership here, I wanted a username of "M-16" - but that was already taken.  So for "M" I used "Mongoose" because it is pound-for-pound one of the most ferocious creatures on earth - it even kills poisonous snakes like the king cobra!  When I saw those cheap Chinese BMX bikes in Walmart labeled "Mongoose", I was really pissed!

OP:  Sorry to hijack your thread with my warped sense of humor.

The correct answer is to get them all!

My opinion is that you should start with the 5.56mm first.

This. Best to cover the basics as far as your first is concerned, then branch out to the variants  if you still think there is a need.

For what you listed your purpose to be I'd say go 223 and get a 22 adaptor. You can always upgrade later. CDNN had CMMG piston rifles for about $900 last I looked.

Your absolutly corrrect.
40 years ago the trend was a slightly smaller bike with smaller fat tires, not a BMX bike but one of the things that lead to them.
