School me on the USCG (Port Security Specialist). I'm considering joining up. How hard is it to get in? what's USCG life like? Deployments? I want to know everything there is to know about it. What can you guys tell me? I'm also considering USAF Security Forces, so info or opinions on that are welcome too. I've got my AS in Criminal Justice, in case that matters..

Port Security is reserve only.

It won't exist anymore soon. There is a new rate called ME or Maritime Enforcement that starts in the new fiscal year that will be phasing out the PS.

Best you can do is call up the CG recruiting station.

I am waiting to ship off to basic myself for active duty.

Coasties are the best.  Pick that before the Air Force.

We have a HTF member here who is in the CG, let me see if I can remember his screen name...

dskelton227  - He is active duty stationed at the mouth of the Columbia.  Send him an IM/email.

You know why you need to be six foot tall to be in the CG?

In case the boat sinks!

Thats an old squid joke.

It's just me and I know it's probably an unpopular opinion on these boards, but I would say fuck volunteering to join any branch of armed service. I respect you with the utmost respect I can muster (and anyone else who is active or going to be active) if it is the path you choose to go...but I've got four or five vetrans that will give you a few good reasons not to do it. One guy's been waiting on a knee for 15 years. And actualy, waitings not the best term, he is hobbling through life barely staying clean/sane in a body that he sacrificed for this country. A country that told him they would fix him if he ever needed it. They lie to you. Plain and simple.

But again, if you do, thank you, you're the reason people like me can have these opinions...

Aces,
Thank you for your opinion. I do realize that it is an unpopular view, and I can't say that I agree with your viewpoint; but I respect it. Just like the rest of the men and women joining while the US is actively fighting oversees, I realize that my decision will take me away from my wife and two baby girls, possibly forever if the worst should happen. I for one would not join up, then bitch and whine later on when "they lied to me" and it "was not supposed to be like this". I know full well what I am signing up for, and have family members that have served and are currently serving in Afghanistan. Thanks again for the sentiment.

Those aren't reasons  to not enlist, they're reasons to fight Obamacare.

I will gladly discuss the +'s and -'s of a military career (however short) with anyone, including warnings of the pitfalls of believing what Voils tells them but just because the VA sucks does not mean one should enlist. Most folks who do one hitch will only interact w/the VA if they use their GI Bill.

NOTE WELL: I have two co-workers who are fellow retired Army NCOs, who made the (nearly fatal!) mistake of selecting Madigan as their primary care provider.  As a retiree seen under those conditions, you are low priority, we'll-see-in-6-months-1hen-wee-can-squeeze-you-in scum.

But that's no reason not to join the Coast Guard, which is under DHS anyway.

Coast Guard is a pretty good deal. I have been active now for five years now and haven't looked back. Gained alot of experience and done a lot of cool things, i.e. counter drug patrols in the pacific, fisheries patrols in alaska, schools at the Federal Law enforcement training center, and a lot of search and rescue. The marine enforcement rate still has a lot of questions around it but they are slowly working them out and the rate should be online around 2010, maybe. I cant recommend the CG enough. The Maritime Law Enforcement mission is really taking a shift with the Deployable Special Forces coming online last year. So if your interest is LE we def. have it. If you have any questions abouth the CG feel free to ask. Also if you ever find yourself down in Long Beach i will be more than happy to show you the station and get you a boat ride. I am a Boatswains mate down at Cape disappointment and i drive the 47' Motor Lifeboats and the 25' Response Boats.

Right on. When my time comes I hope to either strike BM or get it guaranteed A school.

I notice post counts tend to soar when 1) The lose their job, 2) They work at Microsoft, or 3) They work at Boeing.

So you all need to go out and get real jobs!

EDIT:  Mrs. Drang would suggest I mention the possibility that I'm anti-social.
And that I should get back to my planned day-off activities, including writing our commie congress-critters about Crap & Tax, Reading the Fucking Bills, and Socializing Health Care.
Fortunately we've reached that time of year when it's so dry, that even the weeds don't grow fast enough to necessitate mowing them weekly...

</highjack> We now return you to your regularly scheduled Coastie-bashing...
(Which Mrs. Drang hates, and I point out that, when we were in Long Beach, I said that USCG Rescue Swimmers were badder than Delta Commandos and Navy Squeals.)
