Okay, this is really random but hey, it is comming from me!

I have decided that sitting on the front porch puffing on a pipe would be relaxing.

Anyone have any pipe experience want to share any thoughts?

Also looking for a place in SNOHO to get pipes and tobacco to put in them.

I know there are many different kinds and such and just looking for a little insight.

Apparantlly I am getting old.......I want a pipe.....go figure!

There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on the deck and puffing away slowly on some Rum-Kavendisch through my Savanelli. Come to think of it, I need some relaxin'...

I used to be a fan of regular old Dr. Grabow's pipes.  Depending on how much you smoke, you'll want more than one in order to rotate while cleaning.  Some old codgers have seven and rotate on a daily basis.  Also, thanks to the obamessiah, loose tobacco is now stupid expensive (20+ dollars more per pound than before April 1).  Regardless, pipe smoking is pretty bitchin'.

Bong for the win. The Asian smoke shops say "For Tobacco use only".  Must be OK.

Saw a whole article in a liberal rag called "The Toilet Paper" in Colorado about the legal use of a "water pipe" in public.  Two idiot skater/stoner kids sitting on the police station steps smoking tobacco out of a bong.

I've considered a pipe several times... but have only made it as far as cigars.

The primary reason I haven't moved on to pipes is that I know I'll feel obligated to treat it like a hobby.  I'm going to do lots of research on pipes, lots of research on what kinds of tobacco to smoke and in what order, and I'm going to have to get a few pipes to rotate.

I don't need another hobby right now, so I'll stick to cigars.

+1 on the Dr. Grabow. It's been a while since I smoked them so I don't have any recent tobacco recommendations. The Smoke shop at 112th and Evergreen in Everett is nice in that there are only legit tobacco products there, not paraphernalia, porn and airsoft

If the taste matched the smell, I'd probably be a fan. (same with cigars)

Not to be an enabler, but you could skip right past them, to the tobacco that even the antis have trouble bitching about.

Works in planes, trains, and automobiles. (and the occasional business meeting too)

I used to love a good cigar.  Anymore, I can't stand the taste, or the taste the next morning.
As a kid I always helped pick pipe tobacco for my grandfather based on the smell (before smoke obviously).

I smoke pipes a few times a week.

I am not sure how far from Ballard you are, but there is a local shop that makes there own pipes and blends their own tobacco. Kirsten Pipes. They make some of the best smoking pipes I have ever smoked, but they look like the type of pipe all the other posters are referencing.

However, some of the best tobacco I smoke comes from Boswell's. You do have to pick up the phone and call them, but they are nice people. They also have great pipes.

If you just want to get started get yourself a pipe and see if you like it, I would order a few blends from Boswell's and get a corn cob from Aristocob on ebay. You can get a nice corn cob for ten dollars, and if you take care of it, it is the only pipe you will ever need, unless you smoke more the once a day or do not want to look like a hill billy. I personally do not care and love taking the dog for a walk with the corn cob hanging from my mouth.

Thanks for the link! Pipes are spendy but they have a couple of blends I may have to try!

That is why I have more than one pipe, is because in my research people kept saying how nice this one smoked, or how nice this one was. Yeah, now I have more pipes than I need, but do not tell my wife, I want more

Kind of like guns, expect less expensive, and more likely to kill you..

Not necessarily.  Doc Grabows re cheap, being mass produced.   Probably $15 +/-. They also let you experiment with various styles to determine whether you prefer bent or straight pipes. THEY ALSO ALLOW YOU TO TRY DIFFERENT STYLES OF PIPE TO SEE WHICH YOU PREFER, I.E., CURVED V. STRAIGHT.
(I was going to redo that without caps lock, but decided, wotthehell..)

pipes.org
Home page of the Pipesmoke Ring.  (Pipe smokers web sites.)
The Pipe Smokers Intelligencer  (New site to me.)
eGay's tobacco pipes section.  (Under "Tobacciana.")(Yes, you can get decent deals for pipes on eBay.)
Here is the one blog post I've made at The Clue Meter on the topic––thus far.

When I was working at the Tinderbox at South Center after I retired from the Army, we used to tell people that, as far as smoking quality, you got what you paid for, up to about $150-200 dollars.  After that, you were paying for craftsmanship and artistry, but it probably would make little difference to the actual "smokability" of the pipe.

On the other hand, being mass produced means that every once in a while, someone gets a Grabow that is "just right."

Personally, I never really cared for the gloppy flavored tobaccos.  (Mango-mint, Tropical rain, Rum and banana, whatever.)  I prefer the English blends, in which you have... tobacco.  I really like the blends with some Latakia in them, Syrian or Cypriot, I don' care.  A little perique is nice, too.

Here's a hint, though:  Smoke what tastes good to you.

Someone mentioned "I wish pipe smoke tasted as good as it smells."  I wish cigar smoke smelled as good as it tastes.  Even a curmudgeon––and it has been a lifelong goal of mine to have friends and acquaintances refer to me as "Oh, Drang, well, he's a curmudgeon, you know"––might prefer not to have people hate his presence because he smells like Fidel Castro...

Cornell & Diehl custom tobacco blenders.
G.L. Pease, ditto.  (Greg Pease and Craig Tarler of C&D do blends together called "Two Friends.")

Oh, but you should rotate your pipes.  Smoke one, let it rest a few hours, smoke another in the meantime...
And then let them rest a day or two between.

Oh, and TonitrusEN, I never smoked a cigarette, and rarely cigars,  before taking up the pipe.

Remember, "A pipe gives a wise man time to think, and a fool something to do with his mouth besides talk."

Also, according to the Sturgeon General's report, "moderate" pipe and cigar smokers (defined as doesn't inhale, and less than five times  a day!) are actually healthier than non-smokers, aside from a percentage of oral cancer that is barely statically significant.  (I.e., with the sample size, "Twice the instances" was 2 cases instead of one, per thousand .)  The "healthier" factor is probably accounted for from the emotional or psychological stress relief from smoking the pipe.  (Or cigar, to be fair.)  And the fact that non-inhaling pipe and cigar smokers have no higher incidence rates of lung cancer than non-smokers indicates that second hand smoke is a crock of shit.

I'm just sayin'.

This.
I am a fan of the Danish style pipes, and pipe makers, but my favorite of all time was by Jim Boswell.  Alas, there was a hot spot...  (This can happen with ANY brier pipe.  And no one has ever found a better material for pipes than brier root.)
