I have been offered a position in another store. Same job I do now, just at a different facility. A little back story: They re-districted the markets in this area. My store changed to a new market. I am currently without a boss, as they just hired someone new with no previous walmart expeience, he came from a different chain. I know nothing about the new boss. With the change in markets I have also inherited a shitty schedule...... rarely get a weekend off, days off are never together, etc....

Pros:
I'd get my old boss back, who I like very much
I'd get my cushy schedule back, which I like
No difference in pay, although it may effect my bonus somewhat. no way of knowing how much until the end of the year.
I would be back in the market with all of my old friends and co-workers

Cons:
I generally like everyone at my current store, and would miss working with many of them
I would go from a 5 minute drive to work, to about 30
Have to break in a whole new store into "my" way of doing things

Probably some more Pros and Cons that I can't think about right now. Overall I think it would make my job more enjoyable, other than the drive. I left Aberdeen because I hated the drive every day. Now I'm going back to having to drive, which would technically affect my pay as I would be spending alot more on gas than I currently do.

What say you?

From what you've said, I'd say make the switch.

The drive says a lot.

Good luck on how it turns out. Compared to lots of others these are both good choices.

Work, when you go someplace to work, is about the people you work with. It sounds like it would be worth the drive. Who knows, with the new boss coming on he may not be hip to the Kooter way of keeping the products from walking out the door. Better to work with people who know and support (I assume) your style of doing things.

Tht's kind of what I am thinking. I have my old boss trained just right. Breaking in a new one could go either good or bad.

summer's coming K, and with it $4/gal gas.

The Pros, outside of the commute, sound like they outweigh the Cons.

I'd weight commute very heavily.  30 minutes x 10 (to/fro 5x/week and more during inventory time, right?) will get tiresome.

Working with a boss you like can be very hard to give up.  I'd do that, especially if your liked boss is gunning for District Manager anytime soon, that would help you immensely.

theres a lot to be said for getting along with the boss and crew...i drive about a half hour a day and while i don't enjoy it, it's not that bad...

Depending on what you get in the way of mileage.. I'd say make the switch.

I don't mind mileage....much. Given the description, I switch.

New bosses always come in with grand ideas.  Stay with the current/old boss.

If you have a good relationship with the old boss would he or she not hire you in later on down the road if you decide to stick it out where you are now to see how it goes? With the current economy I would think it would be better to know two people in hiring/firing positions than one. I say stick it out to see how the new boss is (if moving back with the old boss is a future possibility in case you have to bail).

Personally I would take it.

Sounds like you really liked the "market" you were in....co-workers, supervisor and such. Which probablly made you alot happier with your career. Being comfortable and happy with what you are doing is a great thing, but actually enjoying those arround you and above you are big pluses in any job.

Get a Ford Fusion Hybrid, and take the 30 min drive to the boss/crew you know. Leave the Scout at home for fun after hours/weekend/off-time play.

If you assign points, it would look like so (starting at zero points):

Pros:

I'd get my old boss back, who I like very much +1

I'd get my cushy schedule back, which I like +1

No difference in pay, although it may effect my bonus somewhat. no way of knowing how much until the end of the year. +1

I would be back in the market with all of my old friends and co-workers +1

Cons:

I generally like everyone at my current store, and would miss working with many of them -1

I would go from a 5 minute drive to work, to about 30 -1

Have to break in a whole new store into "my" way of doing things -1

Given the above you are still 1 point in favor of taking the new slot. That being said, personally, I would adjust the points as follows:

The pay difference and bonus opportunities are an unknown. The way retail sales are reporting right now. it's a major unknown, no matter where you are. I wouldn't use that as a pro or con. Resulting score: 0

A 30 minute drive is nothing, really in the grand scheme of things, drop that one: Resulting score: +1

Personally, I would find breaking a new store into "your" way of doing things as a challenge. From what you've told me, you're good at what you do. Would be pretty satisfying to shape the new place up. Move that one to a pro. Resulting score: +2

I only assigned 1 point to the work schedule. This can be more valuable than pay. What good is a job if you can't enjoy the fruits of your labor? Same can be said for working with people you like and a boss you like.

On top of all this, moving around a bit and succeeding wherever you go, looks a lot better to upper management and on your resume than the guy who worked at the same store for 15 years. Shows you aren't stagnant.

I say go for it.

30 miles is cake.. I've been doing it for a  year.. in a Suburban that gets 10-11mpg

I'd also rather deal with a boss that I know would back me up..

Looks like the commute is the only real hangup.

Hard for me to judge that one for you. 30 minutes in the LCR gets me time to listen to the local news or break another eardrum while taking in the landscape. 30 minutes anywhere north of Lacey (assuming north) sounds like a strong argument for Zoloft.

YMMV (<–––– see what I did there?)

30 miles is a cake commute. Been doing them for near 20 years. The trick to work is making it not feel like work.

edited for spelling

I hated the drive to Aberdeen with a passion. Took me about an hour, but there was zero traffic ever...... which made it atleast tolerable. This drive will also be no traffic. I'm just dreading having to commute again since I have gotten lazy and am used to leaving for work at 6:55 and getting there by 7.

One thing I didn't think of until today was that the Lacey store always has more exciting stuff happen than the other store. Always getting the traveling groups, fights, chases, etc.... The fun stuff. There won't be as much of that at the other store, but that will give me a better chance to focus on the harder to identify shrink that happens at a store.

I let my old boss know today that I will take it though. If I don't like it I can always come back next time Lacey comes open. Seems there has been an opening around here about every year and a half to two years.
