Haha, alot of people are that way... These are meant for emergency use, and if you are really in a situation where you need to give/get one, you wont even be thinking twice.
Since you are a Paramedic... You, and I both know that If anyone here is in a situation where they would need to do a stick... A couple of 1000 bags of NS is not all that they are going to need. Stick them till they bleed ringers only lasts so long. |

Trust me, I know. Its not always the best for the trauma patient to turn their blood into cool-aid, but it never hurts to have these supplies for stuff beside trauama, dehydration for one... So you are going to promote untrained people sticking eachother? There is more then one way to rehydrate a Pt.... Im not trying to dog on you man, Im just not one that thinks it is a good idea to let people run around with this stuff without the training. It is that whole Do no further harm thing ya know. |

I for one like the idea since it's a pain in the ass having to buy bulk Solution, lines, catheters or pay 300 bucks for complete kits... but anyways Ima go back to my corner... ![]() |

He is NOT wrong... I even understand that he is not promoting this as anything more then a collectable for his own protection... I know what people that are just learning to do sticks do. The time to be learning is not when you need it NOW... Rehydration is a great example of how to use this stuff, but when you dehydrate your veins get harder to find, and the stick even harder. Rapid transport is the best, and If you have to, you can just stick the line right up the old cazoo to rehydrate your pt. As far as trauma, you need more then just IV's. Rapid transport, O2, bleeding control.... A lot of time more then one guy can handle by himself, let alone with a bunch of nerves/shakes, and jitters getting in the way. Dont get me wrong... I have NO problem with people getting access to this stuff. I just dont want someone that does not have the stick time going after me. Or worse yet, I dont want people getting some sorta false hope that they can save the world with a 1000 bag of saltwater. |

When I bred dogs in the 1980's my vet would always supply me with Ringers Lactate and IV setups. Parvo Virus was rampant in AZ and lots of dogs were lost to dehydration from it. Thanks to my vet setting me up I never lost a pup to Parvo. I've seen some so called pros in the hospital that couldn't start an IV for shit. The average junkie doesn't seem to have a problem finding a spot. |

Like I said...
Dont get me wrong, There are great uses for this stuff. Just know what you are doing first. You dont need to use IV bags just for IV use... You can use them as eye wash, you can use the needles as splinter removers ect... I dont even want to give the idea that the common man cant do a stick, I know people in hospitals that cant hit shit... I know guys that can hit all day long. You can mess people up with this stuff. Just understand that. I gotta get to work, or I would play more. |

Thank you all for your input. I thank all of you for not ragging on me, for a second I thought thats what this whole thread was going to be. R-32, thank you for your input, and you are right, just as right as everyone else too. IV's are an ALS treatment for a reason, but as stated, they can be used for all different uses. IV's are a very contriversial subject in the use of trauma, pros consist of rehydration, keeping the vascular space full to facilitate tissue perfusion, cons being that fact that it deteriorates the clotting factors. And as agreed on, I am not supporting the use of these supplies by non-trained persons.
R-32, I understand your worries and I think everyone here should appreciate you for your concern. I agree with the latin phrase, "primum non nocere" meaning first do no harm. |
