Could be a couple of things. Either the link that is hosting the picture is dead or when you entered the link in the avatar area, the link isnt complete. Alot of people do the copy/paste and it doesnt get the entire link.

Avatars are hosted on AR15.Coms media server, linking to a photohost like Photobucket won't work, they have to be uploaded.
