Part I

My older son says he wants to hunt deer this year, provided he remembers to take his hunter safety course this year. If so, I'll be forced out of retirement. (I stopped hunting deer for the most part, about 3 years ago)

Part II

I got a Cabelas gift card from Chelleshooters family for Christmas last Dec, and finally got around to trying to spend it last week. After spending an hour or so on their site, I finally caved and ordered another hunting knife.... that I sure as hell didn't need.

Part III

1GR bought me a knife for Christmas, about a decade ago. I had seen them in stores, but always figured that the 'gut-hook' feature was a gimmick or passing fad. After using it the next season and every year since, on every deer I've ever shot since, I can assure you that it's the neatest gadget since sliced peanut butter.

Part IV

So, I thought, "why not get a copy of that cool knife 1GR bought me?". After looking, I found what I thought was a modern version of the same. But it arrived today, and it's at least twice as big

.

Large & deep bladed knives aren't my favorite. But hopefully we'll get to give it a whirl this fall.

Anyhow, all of the above is to save me explaining myself in future posts. First pic has the new (camo) version, with the old (used hard and put away wet) version. 2nd pic has some other favorites. (one of them has been with me longer than a few arfcommers have been alive) (lights and snoose in pic to provide scale)

Let's talk hunting and skinning knives! Whatcha got? Whatcha like?

Nice knives ODT.
I like the "Sharpfinger" knives in the pic.
Smaller is better usually.

ETA: I carry my Buck 110 like I have for 30 years.
It's done all I've asked of it.

Right on. The Sharpfingers get A+ for style & use, and a C- for holding an edge. No matter though, I like them, and don't mind sharpening them.

Small knives are definitely superior out in the field, in my book. Kitchen knives are a different story of course.

1GR and I have a good friend who uses an old trapper style knife for it all. I almost ordered one of those last week instead. (Cabelas didn't specify if it locked or not. I wanted the lock)

I had Lee McLean in Alaska make me the skinner. I did three elk and a deer with it (sheath notches) before I sharpened it. He made it out of a planer blade and it skins great and handles just as good. It does all the heavy lifting. The buck is my backup and does all the utility stuff.

One of my favorites, the Hobbit Warrior..

My favorite, the Warrior, an original Al Mar...

Haven't hunted in years, but always felt at home with a decent sized bowie. Just a slut for big tools, I guess. If I gotta slug it out, the HW is my tool of choice. Out in the woods these days would most likely find a TOPS blade on my hip.

Nice looking skinner. Never owned a custom knife myself, nor have I heard of Mr. McLean.

A good blade is irreplaceable though. The one the toehead bought for me finally got sharpened after my last buck. Amazing tool.

I hate to admit it, but knives are one place you do get exactly what you pay for.

Nice knives.

I haven't been hunting in ages but I love knives and I've got a couple of handmade hunters.

The first was made by Tim Hull in Cisco TX and the second was made by Gerry Randall out of Austin.

There's a better picture of the first knife on the maker's web site: http://www.timhullknives.com/Gallery.php (2nd row, middle pic)

I picked up the skinner at a yard sale for $5 about 15 years ago, Too big to use though. I use the folding Gerber for everything. Keeps a good edge, and has cleaned about a gazillion squirrels, rabbits and several deer........... A couple were even mine
