So say I have this triangle sidefolder Bulgy 5.45 AK parts kit.  Say I'm ordering a NoDak Spud receiver to put it together with, along with a K-var rivet set and a 922r trigger group.

Say I'm job hunting right now and have zero money to buy a hydraulic press and all the jigs and tooling to assemble this thing, even though I have all the necessary parts...

...who do I bribe with one (possibly several) bottles of Maker's and/or a 12 pack of canned Miller / Bud / Busch / whatever to help me put this damn thing together?

My RPK-74 needs a playmate.

If I had the space, and the time, I would help ya out..

Im not going to be ready till springtime at the least. Throw in that my days off are in the middle of the week.

Right now I am trying to "Tool up" in my own garage so I dont have to depend on EOP. Im finnishing up a Polish Underfolder today, and going to de-mill another Romanian. but Im doing everything on a desk.

Well, the time part isn't an issue so much for me, so I can coordinate with what works for you... I'm unemployed right now, and all.  Every day is a weekend.

From the jist of this thread, I should probably wait until I'm unemployed before I get around to building some kits up, that way I'll have something to do....

Pencil me in for Spring!  I'm trying to find a kit and a flat.  I would love to build and AK.  I've talked to Gator about it a few times but I've never pulled the trigger on ordering a kit.

I have all the fancy tools except the press.  Been Using EOP's but I will have a bead blaster and press prolly come spring myself.  I myself have not time it's hard enough to get enough time to help the people I know.  I still need to get a bunch of mine done this year myself too.

I don't know about local shop for say,  however blackwell industries which frequents the WAC shows should have all you would need.  I myself am a believer in capitalism and if I can get it cheaper elsewhere I do,  plus I am cheep....

Or you can do your part to help stimulate the economy, and buy tools to do it yourself.

Honestly you guys that have not built your kits yet because you dont have the tools, or know how...

You can build these things easy!. the Press is the hard part, otherwise there is no reason you cant build these things with a few hand tools.

[Rant on how "I" see it now]
I will not sugarcoat it, I have gotten well past burnt out of "build partys" you end up with 6 people showing up, wanting YOU to demil their stuff,.. Then they want YOU to press out their bbl pins, and bbl's, then they want YOU to set up their flats... ( I hate flats!.. I have a bending jig, but im happy to make it a paperweight...I go with NODAK's now, they really are worth every single penny), then they want YOU to drill out their trunion holes, then they want YOU to rivet their stuff, then they want YOU to paint their stuff...ect...ect...ect... I think you guys get the point.

I would ask that if you join a build party, and want to make the guy's that are hosting the party happy... AT THE LEAST, demil your kits at home. That means cutting off the old receiver stubs.. If you cant even grind off some old rivets, and peel off the old receiver parts, that tells me you dont even have basic hand tool skills.. Come on man, A handfile would take a little bit to do it, but it would work, a dremil tool works just fine. Then all you have to do is punch out the old rivets from the lower holes on the front trunion...You might even be able to drill, or punch out the 2 long rivets in the rear trunion. grind off the rivets that hold the trigger guard on ... Then when you show up all that has to be done is start pushing out bbl pins, and bbl's.. That would honestly save a couple of hours when you get a few guys to show up. If you have NODAK's, or other factory prebend receivers then you will be ready to drill out the holes, and start riveting..  If you are running a flat, plan on going home at that point, and doing some fitting with a handfile till the next time.

You can whip a kit up in about 5-6 hours if you plan ahead, and have a few tools.. if not it will take a few weekends.

[/Rant over]

So optimal setup is to have the kit demilled and the old rivets removed before a build party?

Easy way to do that is just a dremel and a light touch, right?

I can do that.  I just don't have the hydraulic press to remove and replace the barrel or the barrel pin, and I've never formed rivets before.  I'm also wanting to install a scope siderail which means removing and replacing the center support from my NoDak Spud receiver, which is something I'd want some help with (it locates and aligns with the center support and one of the rear trunion rivets, by my understanding).

I'm not asking for somebody to build it for me...  More like somebody to watch over my shoulder and scream before I fuck it up.

EDIT: Since somebody asked, I'm wetside, North Bend.  Potentially (probably) moving to Duvall here in the next few months (yay for my own house, but I'll miss Snoqualmie Valley).

You bet!...

You really dont have to have a "light touch" a dremel tool will make quick work of it. Just cut off the heads, and use whatever you can to pry off the old receiver stubs.

You will only be able to get out the lower rear rivets on the front trunion after you peel off the old sheet metal, the other 4 you wont be able to get out till after you press out the bbl pin, and bbl.

The rear trunion ( the thing the stock is attached to in the case of a wood stock) is the bitch... I dont expect everyone that shows up to have the old rivets out of that because most people dont have a drill press... But if you do, just get a small drill bit and some oil, and head on in...expect to break a bit ( and it sucks!), but once you are through, it is easy to just use a punch to push what is left out.

As for hand forming the rivets... I did that once..wont do it again..looks like a bag of smashed assholes. They make tools for that stuff, and we have them. Aeros has a bitchen jig for doing rivets...looks good when he is done. If you can have the trig guard off. ( and dont lose the parts) you really save time at a build party.

Where did you hear about removing the center support to put on a scope rail?  They are clearanced for the center support w/ a little recess cut-out on the back of the side plate.

Ok, I'm going senile early then.  My apologies.

That's good, though.  Means I don't have to redo the center support.  I am worried about getting it lined up right, though...

Now I just gotta get my kit demilled and get my NoDak order off...  It should be here sometime in March / April (my hunch)

You guys want to start planning a weekend build party / housewarming / early-season BBQ at my new place around then?

Well, I would suggest getting onto the forum at http://www.northwestfirearms.com/.
Simply because they keep talking get togethers for AK  Build parties and frankly,
there are not enough folks from WA on the forum.

My 2 Cents.
