I have a buddy in Iraq that I want to mail a care package to. Is there any special rules to follow and or items that cannot be mailed to him? Also any specific place/service I should use?

He said he just wants junkfood/snacks. So I was going to buy a bunch of it for him.

USPS AFO/APO Priority Flat rate box is the best way to go I think.

This.

You'll also have to fill out the customs declaration form.  You can be vague "snacks", not "Doritos, Cool Ranch, 6.5oz".

When you mail it, you're mailing it to the APO / FPO (AE, AA, AP) in the U.S.  Priority Mail gets it there in two to three days.  From there, it gets turned over to the military and they get it out of the U.S. and on to the final destination.  That can be two days to a month.

FWIW, I had mail get to my ship when in the Persian Gulf, from New Jersey in a week.  The mail went from NJ to FPO AP (San Francisco).  FPO AP knew the whereabouts of my ship and forwarded it to me.  New Jersey to Everett (homeport) took longer--up to a month.
