These guys had them.

A clip from the 1966 movie Grand Prix.  

This clip, like all of the racing scenes from the movie, was filmed in real time in real F2 races. Best of all, this was filmed in one of the last years that the race at Spa ran the full original track, including the Masta Kink (where the cars bend between 2 farmhouses at 190MPH). This clip is what F1 racing should be, rather than the dull parade it is today. Check out that gear linkage on the Ferrari. Good stuff!

Back then the drivers had to have them.

Between 1954 and 1969 12 drivers were killed during racing or qualifying, in the 1970s 8 died, there were 4 in the 80s and 2 in the nineties both at the same event no less.

its a shame that most motorsports are lame nowdays  i miss the old group b rally cars wrc just doesnt have the same feel as the group b races did.
