Hello everyone. I currently live in the State of Alaska, and have since I was born, so I'm a little ignorant to the ways of gun laws and restrictions =) I bought myself an M4 Carbine several months back, and I really love it! And this site is awesome. So I was hoping that someone can help me with a little problem.

In two weeks I'm driving down to WA to start college at WSU in Pullman. I know I can't have my rifle with me there, but I have been told I can store it with the WSU Police. I'm a little worried about this, however, since I basically have to walk up to the police and show them my weapon, and I'm worried about any sort of legal issues.

I've done a bunch of reading and stuff about Washington gun laws, and from what I understand magazine capacity won't be an issue (but I bought a five-rounder in case someone makes it an issue). So I was wondering if there are any other things that I should be worried about, like a 6-position stock, 16" barrel, etc.

Thanks in advance!

That's all fine.

Welcome to WA.  I don't envy you moving to Pullman, but there are some things to do and sights to see if you get a ways out from that area.  You'll be close to good steelhead fishing on the Clearwater.

Isn't there a member up in that area that has some gun safe room? Might be an option to consider. Sure you'd be trusting a complete stranger at the start.... but I'd rather risk that, then have the cops store my weapon for me. Just a thought.

Welcome friend, to the best State in the Union!

Didn't know the cops would store your weapon for ya.........better give 'em a call before ya show up with it!

Hopefully there is someone down here you can make friends with, that'll take care of it for ya.  I'd be willing to do it, though I'm a ways away from Pullman.

Yeah, your weapon's good to go here.  Most of us have very similar ones!

Thanks for the fast responses guys! Its true, at least thats what my WSU advisor told me, since I was unable to contact the WSU department of public safety. Maybe I should try again though! I also need to find a good shooting range !

Definitely give them a call.  The college advisor told you--I'd wanna make REAL sure this is correct.

We got ranges all over the place.  How far ya willin' ta travel?

Where I went to school in seattle the campus police would store weapons.  My buddy kept one of his ar's there and they scratched it all up and it looked to be fired one time when he went to get it, after that he kept it under his mattress in one of those fold up bags.

There has to be a member who would hold onto it for you.  Wheres that WSUgixer guy...if not I can get you some names of people who might hold onto it

Wow thats kinda sad that the weapon was treated like that! I'm hoping to only have to store it with the police for a few weeks, and getting myself a heated storage unit or something to store it and some of my other stuff (future handgun maybe? I did just turn 21, and I already found myself a microbrew chocolate stout!). As far as going to the range, I wouldnt want to have to travel to far, mostly because i'm just going to have my ninja 250r and that could be an awkward traffic stop. Suppose I could always impose on some people to drive me though.

If you are driving down how do you plan on getting it through Canada?

Hah actually I used to work for FedEx...up until about a week ago. My parents will be shipping it down to me after we get there via my old manager. 75% shipping discount is nothing to shake a stick at!

Pullman maybe a college town, but there definately a lot of hunters. I would call the campus police just to make sure but I'm pretty sure they will store weapons. I never had to worry about storing any weapons though as I only lived on campus my freshman year.

For ranges, I know there are some down in Lewiston and up in Spokane. Again, I never had to worry about it as the place I stayed in was on 400 acres and we could just shoot off the porch. If you get to know any of the local farmers, you could probably find a decent place to shoot about 15 minutes outside of town.

I'd be an advocate for trigger locks in that situation.  Maybe keep the bolt group.

Haha yes I just bought a trigger lock and one of those cable lock thingies to stick through the chamber. Now I found out that I can't actually ship it via FedEx unless its to a FFL. What a pain! The US should just buy Vancouver and the surrounding area so we wouldn't have to leave the good ol' USA to get down there. Someone just told me that I would need to have a thousand dollars on had for emergencies to drive through Canada. This is turning into a big pain, but I don't want to leave my rifle up here in AK.  Being able to shoot that close out of town would be awesome!
