This is some pretty good info. I also sent it to everyone on my email list. It could really come in handy to some poor ArfComer who gets drunk at the LCR and can't find his lighter.

If you're out hiking, hunting. riding a quad or snowmobile and for whatever reason and you get stranded over night this info can save your life. All you need is some steel wool and a 9 volt battery and you have an instant fire. This should be part of everyone's 10 Essentials and/or Survival Kit.

Nice to know but I think I'd rather carry a bic.

Thats kinda neat, I have a magnesium block for when I go hunting that I carry as a back up to two lighters but I might have to add this into the bag. I will give it a whirl next elk camp and see if I can make some money on a few bets.

Humm Would have figured you hard core survivalists and LCR weekenders would have known this long ago.  Its a basic with the boy scouts.

Here is another one.  Wrap a handful of strike anywhere matches in saran wrap, followed by a layer of tinfoil.  Then dip it in melted wax.  Makes for a small but waterproof package to keep your matches dry.

Interesting info for sure, but if you have your 10 essentials/survival kit with you, why wouldn't you have matches? They are certainly easier to carry than a 9 volt battery and some steel wool.

I remember when I was doing a lot of long haul backpacking,  the groupthink was to dip wooden matches in wax for fire starting.

When I was doing the logistics, I figured out that a single bic was equal to a whole box full of matches.

Just carry a lighter,,

, and a spare,

, and a magnesium block backup.

Was watching that Survivor Man show and he was using Fritos for firestarter. Light them with a match and away they go.

Had to try this out. You can get a good 1.5-2" flame off of one Frito. Tons of grease in them but they sure are good.

Now THAT is some interesting information.  How long does the Frito burn?  I'm going to have to go home and try that!

Got a fire started with Pringles once, in some pretty strong wind.  Damn but those little bastards burn something fierce!

Candlefish...

Trouble with Bic lighters, aside from being French, is that they tend to become useless when the fuel gets cold--and the fuel defines "cold" as something like 40 degrees Fahrenheit.iner

As for multiple fire-starting techniques, it works like flashlights and knives, one is none, two is one, etc.

Note that you can now buy a container which will allow you to legally pack a lighter in your checked baggage.

You could always put a lighter in a checked bag, it was carry on that they freaked out about.  But that was lifted some time ago, but you can only carry 1 lighter IIRC.

OK guys since this thread has totally gone into the gutter how come no one has suggested lighting farts? There is a totally unaxhastable supply of hot air on ARFCOM and it is a renewable resource. Shit, you might even be able to apply for carbon credits too!

Cotton balls saturated with petroleum jelly and some waterproof matches are easier and safer to carry, and will ignite when wet every time.  Road flares produce enough heat for a long enough time to light damp kindling, are easy to carry, are very water resistant, and can be used as a signal in an emergency.

Well, i stand corrected.. But that has changed in the last year.  I had a lighter in my laptop bag and was told to put it into my checked bag or throw it away.  Being that I was at security and already check me checked bag in (duh), it went to the trash.
