Local retired sheriff type stated, during a hunters safety education course, that if you carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle you could only do so if it was a pistol and you have a concealed pistol licence.....he continued stressing in tone that the pistol HAS to be ON YOU....I know this has been debated.....rereading the RCW.....JEEEESE......I think it does.

(2)(a) A person shall not carry or place a loaded pistol in any vehicle unless the person has a license to carry a concealed pistol and:

(i) The pistol is on the licensee's person,

(ii) the licensee is within the vehicle at all times that the pistol is there,

or

(iii) the licensee is away from the vehicle and the pistol is locked within the vehicle and concealed from view from outside the vehicle

That "or" is important

EDIT to clarify.

When you are at a restaurant, you order a salad, you ask what kind of dresing they have.  They reply:

You can have Ranch, Italian, or Blue Cheese.

That doesn't normally mean that you can have Ranch AND Italian or Blue Cheese

The bitch of it is......is that Ive known this guy for some time and respect the hell out of him.....old marine and sgt......I would'nt have thought he would have taken a position like that, which my first thoughts were "bull shit"....and then self doubt and confussion.  Marine......SGT with sherrif's department.....retired.....highly respected........and wrong...I would hate to have had a parting of the ways if I had ever been pulled over by him.  (Spelling Fixed)

Keep a copy of the RCW in your car.  Using a GREEN highlighter, highlight the OR.

Or, take him aside, and show him your findings.  No need to be a dick about it, and you can still show him respect.  Lots of people are confused by the laws out there, or have taken other people's word for things.  Perhaps by teaching him the truth, he will then teach others.  If he is a man to be respected, then he can take the fact that he may have been wrong.

I had a WA State Senior Patrolman tell me the same thing when I was pulled over for speeding. I had the pistol at the front of my seat in a hipsack. He said he could arrest me for not having it on my body. I started to get wound up and he stated don't worry I am not going to persue that issue with you and I stated basically that there was not an issue. I got the ticket after I asked for his address so I could send him a copy of the RCW. That way he could inform the public correctly...

After paying my fine, gotta pay to play, I did however file a formal complaint with the State Patrol on the CCW issue. I received a couple of nice phone calls on that one which was a surprise. I figured they just filed complaints like I do...

ETA This Officer was at no time rude or disrespectful imho. Just misinformed and my complaint included that information.

it says...

the licensee is away from the vehicle and the pistol is locked within the vehicle and concealed from view from outside the vehicle

The term "locked within the vehicle" does this mean a in a locked case or just inside a locked vehicle?

also what is the RCW number so I can print a copy
