Is $125 - $175 a decent price for these used Stihl saws?  From what I can tell, they seem to have a 18" inch or longer blade, and at least a 40cc engine.

Linky

I need to get one for around the house and in case of zombies.

I think most of them were older 029s or maybe 028s.  If so (or even the newer 280s and 290s), I'd not bother.  You'd be better off looking for a decent used 26 series saw (about the same size but not a toy) for about the same money if you're patient.

My grandpa's shop is stocked with tools he picked up from 20 years working on a county road crew

This might explain why some of our roads are designed the way they are:

They've got some interesting stuff listed on ebay: www.ga.wa.gov/Surplus/auction.htm

Not sure why the state is selling comic books.

Some of the spelling is quite creative too.

We used my 029 and my fathers 026 side by side when we cut all our firewood up. The 026 is definitely a nicer saw. (much lighter, clear gas tank, etc.) But side by side, the 029 did seem to do just a little more work. Since we were only bucking horizontal logs, I suspect the heavier weight may have been a bit of help in that case.... Whenever I've needed to carry a saw very far, I borrow his.

I'll probably step up next time and spend the extra dough.

They lady at the Surplus store says they are Stihl 290s.  I take it that is the new model number, and the 029 is the old style model number, correct?
