Sorry if this has already been asked before but I got a question about Vista.
Why can't I install my printer on Vista?  We bought our son a new HP computer with Vista installed.
I want to install a LexMark Z715 printer on my sons computer but Vista won't allow it to operate.  The printer is maybe 2 or 3 years old but rarely used so it's like new.
Is there a patch or upgrade to Vista?

I was having the same problems with a new HP Photosmart C6180... finally I tried a random driver for a HP7200, and it works, but now I have to change the IP every other day to keep it running...

From what I've heard, there aren't a whole hell of a lot of drivers out there for 3rd party equipment that is Vista-friendly.

Hopefully, that'll change in due time, when the 3rd party OEMs (i.e. Lexmark) write drivers that work with Vista.

I'll be keeping XP, thank you.

Thanks Gibby, I posted over there also.
Where's PCR?  Isn't he our Microsoft expert?  What's up with Vista?

If the driver is not installing it's probably using an older installer that needs admin rights to install.. Vista won't allow a program to run that requires admin rights without it first asking Vista(and then getting approval from the user). You can get around this pretty easy, but then a stupid bubble pops up at start up with a security message

One of the million reasons I'm sticking with XP for now..

That bubble can be disabled in your security settings section.

+1 on using an old driver.

I used Windows XP and 2000 drivers in Vista for some things that Vista did not detect.

In the end I got fed up with all the fluff and went back to XP.

Now that I didn't know..

I've only dabbled with it a bit, don't do that shit for a living any more(thankfully) so it's not important that I learn it

Yup.  Took me a while to find it while I was Beta Testing Vista.

Go into Security Center.

Click the "Change The Way Security Center Alerts Me" link.

Choose the option to not display the alert or show the icon.

I'm waiting for the paychecks to start rolling in.
Actually we bought it for our son.  He's the tester...
I'm sticking with XP and my HP Officejet all-in-one.
