Ok, so it's new to me, but I thought I'd share with the HTF since it was a topic of conversation the other day. Saw these in Lowes the other day and picked one up. Maglite LED Upgrade ![]() Dropped one in mine and OMFG is it bright. Was under 10 bucks. |
Got two of them for the Minimags. Much better. The Maglite LEDs lack heatsinks and regulators, so their output drops off as they heat up, but it's still a huge improvement. Time to do my C &Ds. |
ok, now I gotta doublecheck..pretty sure it was the one from the link. Found 'em on ebay for 8 bucks. |
|
And you were the one talking shit to me when I mentioned I belonged to a flahslight forum too ( www.candlepowerforums.com BTW). It only took Mag 5 years to come out with what other companies have been selling. An d they aren't even as good. Not terrible though, especially for the price, but not great either. Some of the after market ones are a bit better in that that they have better heatsinking (LED's do get warm and that reduces their lifespan), and voltage regulation to avoid the dimming of the light as the batteries weaken. More expensive though. But then you just buy it once and never worry about it again. Guess that's what happens when you spend more on your legal department than R&D. You get stuck 5+ years behind the times. |
I also found them at Jerrys surplus in everett, I bought mine a few months back for the mini mag and the big mag. I think the mini is brighter. I think it only cost me 5.99 or 6.99 |
Wal-Mart carries them too. I can't remember exactly how much it was but it was around $5-6. The C-D cell LED upgrades were $18 IIRC.

(Did I just say "The Schnizzle"? |

Make sure you guys use the correct ones. They made different models for each type/size of flashlight (talk about marketing $$$). Mine are working quite well. I used one of them for about 40 minutes the other day and did not notice any brightness decay. Also make sure you do NOT get the Nite-Ize (spell?) thing. The first one worked fine in the mini-mags but the one for the big-mag sucks. |
No way. I think i only paid 10 or 11 for mine. I bought them both fur under $20 |
| So you took a turd and put an LED in it? Ive got a 2D Maglite somewhere in storage, I used to use it gunshows to show how much they sucked compared to other flashlights :) I stopped carrying a maglite in the truck when I bought a Surefire 6P in 2000, and I've got an ASP if I need a club for some bizarre reason (although I have to admit I did pull it out once and I'm happy to report it ended the situtation immediately with no injuries). |

The mini mag model is tough as nails also. The 3 led clear model has been on my tool belt for about a year now and still rockin' not to mention way brighter and the batteries last alot longer. It ain't like the old drop it once and its done for bulbs they used to have. I hope the big brother models are as tough... |

For those who use mini-mags I just wanted to point out that I found that plastic pop bottle caps from 20 oz or 2 liter bottles fit over the head very nicely. This can prevent the glass from getting scratched all to hell like mine did while floating around in my tool box. The caps also come in a varitey of colors so I suppose if you had some secret squirrel reason to need a color filter it would work for that. I agree with NWRed to an extent. There is nothing like the light from a sure-fire. I have left mini-mags in my tool box or glove box for years though and they still worked when I needed them to. They will also get dimmer to let you know the batteries need replaced. Not so with my sure-fires and unlike some I don't keep 2 dozen 123a's on hand. |
| I just keep the 123a's scattered around , some in various coats, 4 in the car, couple on the nightstand and in my gun locker and a full box on a shelf. But definitely gonna get the LED conversion for the 3D mag in the car and 2 mini mags in the house for routine use and try and save the G2/batteries for the more important stuff. |
Are some of you guys old school For work (Non-Tactical) head lamps are the way to go. . I just got a Brunton L3 LED headlamp for Christmas. For the last two years I have been using a Princeton TEC head lamp But the 4 AA batteries only last about an hour and half. |
I hear those aren't very good for dirtbike riding at night. |
