I'm having a computer issue again.

After you fixed it, I re-installed the printer stuff from the CD and it was working fine, printed some pics on it.  But last night I tried printing something from word and it won't go.  I noticed that the printer was off, so I turned it on and re-booted the computer, still not workin.  Any suggestions?

I'd check for a warning light on the printer first. If that isnt on then I would check cables and reseat them for the greater good.

Recently my MIL had an issue with hers where the software was not showing that the ink cartridges were out there was a warning light on the printer but that was it.

Also the printheads needed to be cleaned really bad. That is one way to know if you have connectivity also; if the print head cleaning routine runs then you know you have a decent connection to the printer.

YMMV.

I thought maybe it was just the program I was printing from, so I tried printing a test page through the printer and it wouldn't work.  I tried printing from a notepad document, word, and the test page all with no luck.  I double-checked the connections and they were all good.

I just remembered that it was on, the computer was on and I tripped a breaker that morning when I was drying my hair, and that area of the apt lost power.  Could that have done anything to the computer or printer?  Both are plugged into a power strip, and the computer came back on just fine.

Well usually if a power surge takes something out it takes it out and it wont power up at all.

The power light is on for the printer right? If so..

Delete the print jobs from the printer queue and then reboot your printer and computer and try it again. You can get to the printer queue by double clicking the printer in your printers and faxes in the start menu. If you leave those print jobs in the queue you will get them all when the printer starts back up.

I did all of that and I get nothin!  I am beginning to think that my printer is possessed.

Hmm it doesn't sound too good. There are no other warning lights on the printer though? Odd. Maybe it is fried after all. Usually it takes more than a tripped breaker to do that though IME.

That would be wonderful, unless you think its something I could do on my own.  I'd hate for you to waste your time coming over and fix something that is probably so simple.

Printer issues are sometimes like that it seems. I had ahell of a time with my MIL's till I got there and had it fixed in 20 minutes. She was ready to get a new one.

Good Luck!

Well, you can try first to completely uninstall the printer.  (delete it from the Printers section of the control panel, un plug it, reboot the computer, plug the printer back in, see if the computer detects it, let it install, and see if you can print again).

I'll try this again tonight when I get home.  If it doesn't work I'll let you know and maybe you could come out afterwork this week sometime.  Thanks much!

because you sat on the couch and in the "I don't really want to but I have to ask" tone asked "Honey you need any help?"

and mostly, because you don't really care if the damn printer is there as long as the internet is so you can get online and "work".

the boys had soccer last night so I didn't really have time to deal with it, hopefully tonight I'll be able to.  I have projects I'm working on that require printing so I'm hoping to get this handled this week.

Oh how I hate electronic devices!

Okay computer people......I unplugged printer from USB port, and turned off.  I uninstalled all associated programs for my HP printer from my computer.  I rebooted computer, put disc in to re-load HP software.  Got to the screen where it says to connect the device.  I turned on printer, let it run through its thing, plugged it into USB port and got the "USB Device Not Recognized  USB Device attached has malfunctioned and Windows doesn't recognize it.  For assistance click here" window.  I tried all 6 USB ports to no avail.  This is all the same issues I had before the move and before PCR did his magic on the computer.  I installed printer, it worked fine for 2 days and now here we are.

I hate it and I want to kick it.

ETA:  Just for giggles, I decided to hook up my old printer.  I have a crappy Lexmark that I replaced with this HP.  I hooked it up to the same USB port and it fired up no problem.  I unplugged the lexmark, and used its usb cable to try hooking up the HP but its still not working.  I've come to the conclusion that its the printer and not so much my computer?

It would sound like that is the case, however, if there is a section to tell it to look for drivers for the "unrecognized device" point it toward the CD that came with the printer.  You can also go to HP's website and look for updated drivers to download for that model of printer.

Will post more when I think of it.

will not let me do that.  i tried and it said nothing more updated than what i already have.  i think its time for a new printer, and you can bet your buns it won't be another hp.

Not sure how much you paid for your existing one, but I have always had good success with HP printers....the ones I paid more than $100 for.  I have had my share of $40-$60 specials and they were dead and buried long before I got my money's worth.

With things made of all plastic, you really do get what you pay for.

ETA:  Beware of "all in one" printers at a bargain price, if they put all those features and not charging much money, they making up for poor quality of workmanship.

I figured that out when I got my lexmark all-in-one.  This one is a HP Photosmart 8250 and I want to say last November I paid $200-ish for it at Best Buy.
