I was talking to PCR about removing the muzzle brake on my 16" Oly flattop at LCR. His suggestion was vice grips or whack it with a block of wood. Good advice, but I found I needed a little more force. I figured using vice grips would have a chance of damaging the barrel or getting it stuck. Wood worked somewhat, and made lots of splinters.

After whacking at it for a while I pulled out the slide hammer. Its hook attachment fit over the lip on the brake just fine, so I held it in place with one hand and slammed it off. Rotating around the barrel to get all 4 points to clear.

But there's something odd, take a look at the crown on this barrel!

Looks pretty ugly to me. I'm about to send it off to www.ar15barrels.com to have it threaded, and now am wonderig if I should have him put a new crown on it?

I think that is residue.

it is.

Its simply carbon residue buildup.

As has been said, it's just carbon residue buildup.

This was found to have accumulated

underneath an AK style brake.

..sorry, can't help myself..

That'll cause residue buildup

I expected nothing less, after all it was your idea

And yes it does appear to be carbon buildup, it must have built up inside some ridges inside the brake to make those nice looking peaks.

Interesting.  There's no thread there?  So, the comp just slide over the end, and got held in place with a pin?

Way back, when that type of Oly barrel/muzzel brake was used the muzzel brake would fly off the end of the barrel quite regularly when they were held in place by set screws.

Why not take the barrel back doen to Oly and have them thread it for you?

It was held in by 4 allen screws (that were always coming loose) and they kind munched up the groove so that it couldn't be taken off. I suspect that it has been responsible for occsional accuracy problems with this rifle.

As for Oly, they are apparently too busy to take on additional work. It went out in the mail to ar15barrels today.

Also, as an example of why the WA HTF forum is so damn popular and useful, read the responses my post got when I put it in the 'correct' forum for the subject:

That'll make you go blind I heard.

Hey PCR: I have to switch stocks on two of my lowers, got a Guns and Ammo issue handy?

Oly threaded my post ban colt lightweight match target and the results were great.  They did require me to sign or initial a waiver for barrel damage though.
