I would like to  build a low cost modular/protable frame to take shooting. I managed to scrounge up some RR steel plates and i'm planning to get a few more so it also needs to beable to handle the weight and the spawl and shrapnel but still light enough to be drug up into the hills to where my buddies and buddetts go shooting.
Thanks in advance guys and gals.

Lawtalkguy had a great one he used for hanging metal gongs from that he made from black pipe and assorted elbows and t-fittings.

Any damaged parts were easily replaced because the gongs were hung from chains and all of the connections were just threaded together.

I've run PVC frames, but I know that won't help much for steel plates.  I'm not sure how much pipe would run, but I doubt it would be cheap, especially if you were making several of them.

Whats the possibility of making feet, so that the steel could stand up?  2x6s with a slot cut in them would be enough to let even large pieces stand up.

I can't believe you said "broach"..... I almost had to hit the report button.

No man should use words like that on a gun board.

Have you seen the setup I use at LCR shoots? If someone has a picture, can you post it for him.

Use 2x4's ....use hangar bolts and wing nuts on the crossbar.  You have to drill holes in your steel plate and just hang it with some chain. If you don't have a suitable drill, use a hunting rifle.

A decent height is 5 foot--that leaves you 3 foot to use to make the foot  (i.e. think upside down -T).  In reality, base the max height and crossbar length on what fits in your truck.

If your chain or wood gets too shot up, it is cheap and easy to replace.  Use gloves to handle your wood frame because it will pick up lots of brass and lead shrapnel and wood splinters. When I replace my uprights next time, I am considering trying to put a thin sheet of metal on the interior sides. (Of course, right after doing that, someone will invariably destroy the wood upright with a 45-70 or something.)

3 8' 2x4s    (if you aren't hanging steel, you can use 2x3s)
2 hangar bolts
2 washers
2 wingnuts
2 nuts to help screw the hanger bolt in to crossbar
4 of those pieces you use to butt two pieces of wood together at a right angle
10 or so finishing nails in the crossbar to hang targets from
24 or so nails for the right angle thingees

for each steel plate....2 3' chains, 2 bolts, 2 washers, 2 nuts.  Keep your bolts small enough to fit your chain---chain doesnt have to be anything too brutish.
