Ok..so here's the deal...

I found a nice 14.5" M4 type barrel on another board, the price is great, the barrel is nice, and I'd like to buy this for an upcoming build....BUT....here's where I need the "experts" clarification...

The seller of this barrel is in TX and I'm in WA (duh) but his barrel does not have any type of flash hider/compensator/brake on it right now, so would this be classified as an NFA transaction only? Could he and I do biz between each other just as "private citizens"??

I have a brand new Vortex sitting in the parts bin, just waiting to be used, so if he and I could legally conduct this transaction, the barrel and Vortex would be off to the shop for a perm install job.

Could I just proceed as above, or, should I buy the barrel and have the seller ship it to "ACME" gun shop and have their gunsmith perm install the Vortex, then ship to me??

Has anyone here dealt with a situation like this before?

Thanks in advance!

I believe you are OK, as long as you don't put it on a lower.

Since you plan on taking it to a shop for permanent f/h attachment anyway, why not just have it shipped to that shop? It would save a lot of 'what if' hassle.

The 14.5" barrel all by itself is perfectly legal.  It's an unregulated part.

The presence of the 14.5" barrel along with a complete non-pistol AR lower is technically constructive posession of an NFA item (SBR) as you would have everything needed to complete a gun but you don't have a legal configuration for it.  You'd also run afoul of state law on the same basis.

JAFOs suggestion eliminates any sign of impropriety on your part.

So basically, I could "legally" buy say a 10.5" commando type barrel and have it in my posession, as long as I put a 5.5" comp on it??

Where would I find info online regarding all of this?

I trust what you guys are saying, I just want to have a point of reference in the future.

I really don't want to see these guys showing up at my front door....

If you already have all of the parts needed to make a complete AR then to ensure compliance with the law the barrel must measure 16" or more overall and the comp must permanently attached in an approved manner, or you are using it on a pistol and only on that pistol.

Just look around

WA Laws

BATFE

For anything else
