I'm getting ready to travel to Philadelphia and will have my days free.  What suggestions do you have for historical, interesting or fun things to do?  I will have a rental car, so reasonable travel is possible...  I have lived in many places out West, but haven't seen too many places on the East.

Thanks!

I would check out the Historic District such as Independence Hall and the Constitution center. Independence Hall is a very nice attraction. Also fun to see the Liberty Bell which is close by. Valley Forge Park is about 25 miles west of the city and is also a nice attraction that Id' check out. The Art Museum area features a wonderful world class art museum. You can also run up the steps like Rocky did. I'd also visit the Franklin Institute in the same general area. Some very cool scientific exhibits in there.

You can also go down tot he waterfront and visit the Olympia a Pre WW1 Battleship. It's tied up next to a WW2 Submarine which is also open to the public. After that I would hop the ferry and go to Camden NJ across the river and visit the Battleship NJ. from the WW2 era. It's open to the public and is an excellent attraction. Always makes we marvel that humans can build something that massive that floats.

The historic areas of Philly are very nice but the borders change quickly and street crime is not uncommon in the city. Just be aware.

Enjoy. People in Philly are pretty friendly and proud of their city. Rabid sports fans too. Where a local team ball cap and you'll fit right in!

The Philadelphia Art Museum and the Barnes Foundation are must-see's if you are into art.  The Barnes Foundation is in the same area.  The Rodin museum is next door as well.

The Historical area is important to see.  A tour of Independence Hall is very valuable.

Across the river in Camden also has a decent aquarium. If you go to the Liberty Bell you can not take a gun inside. Reading Terminal market is also worth your time.

If you're into coins the Philadelphia Mint is right in Olde City across from Independence Mall

If you want great Italian.  936 S. 9th st  Villa Di Roma,  cash only !   For an unbelievable sandwich a block away is Paesano's @ 1017 S. 9th.  Look em up, Bobby Flay lost a throw down to them a few yrs ago.. Stay away from the tourist trap steak shops, Geno's & Pats.  Reading terminal market is a good spot, and finally Johns roast Pork /cheesesteaks @ Front & Snyder Ave, if you have a car...

What do you like to eat?

Great Italian places on south 9th.
For good beer selection and some tasty 'smoke house' pub style fare check out Khyber Pass pub.
If you want fancy Mexican hit Distrito, El Vez, or Tequilas.
Want funky Asian? Go to Pod......or Buddakan.
Hit Reading Terminal Market and get a roast pork sandwich at DiNics
Also hit DiBruno Brothers cheese shop.
Cuba Libre is awesome....as is Parc.
For some great snow crabs go to Chickies & Petes
Just outside of the city is a cool little BBQ place named Sweet Lucy's....great ribs.

I'll try to think of some more....but these are some of my favorites to start with.

Villa D Roma on 9th Street is a classic. Excellent Italian food. It's also in the heart of the Italian market. An attraction in and of itself. Reading Terminal is also a great place to eat.

One of our favorite places to eat in Philly right now is called Zahav. It's in the old city section of Philly. Not cheap but it's really outstanding. They serve modern Israeli Food which is really good.

Hi Guys,

We are planning a visit to the historic district of Philly and Valley Forge. We are thinking about a 3 night stay.

What areas should we look for as far as hotels? What areas should we avoid?

Not looking to spend much more than $150 a night. We are ok with staying in the burbs and driving in.

Thanks!

At that price you have no really good options in the city that I would suggest.  You're looking at $200+ per night.  Look at King of Prussia and Conshohocken.  You could also stay at one of the airport hotels like Hampton Inn, Courtyard, etc and drive or uber from there.

Would you recommend staying across the river in NJ?

If you are coming during a holiday weekend do NOT stay at the Embassy Suites in the Wayne area. Normally it is a nice hotel, but during holiday weekends there tend to be several sports tournaments in the area and it will be full of (mostly unwatched) children. We have been there quite a few times, this past Memorial Day weekend was the second time during a holiday. Never again.

Art Museum also has a very impressive medieval arms and armor collection.
