By water gap, do you mean the Delaware Water Gap?
By camping, do you mean car camping or hiking out into the woods and camping?

I would suggest purchasing the Appalachian Trail Guide - Pennsylvania and the PA Section Map Set.
I purchased mine from REI.

From the PA AT Guide: "... enter the DWG Village on PA Rt. 611. At the intersection of Mountain Rd a large PennDOT sign notes the AT which comes in from I-80 on Delaware Ave. This street deadends at the chain barrier on I-80 opposite a red brick highway maintenance building between the toll house and the bridge. A  parking lot for hikers is located along the trail 0.3 miles south of the bridge".

If you have any questions, shoot me an IM and I'll send you a cell number.
I started at the DWG and have almost hiked the entire PA Section of the AT.

Here are a couple of pics:

I'm looking to do the same kinda thing only in western PA.  Its not as easy figuring out whats legal and where to go as I thought it would be.

I've only hiked Mt. Tammany and to Sunfish Pond so I've never camped there, but I recall there being a campsite about 2 miles south of Sunfish Pond.  There is a place to park near the Appalachian Trail and I remember thinking it must have been for the campers because it was so full at 8 AM when I arrived.  If you are crossing into NJ from PA on Route 80 East, you basically take the second exit on your right after the toll bridge, turn left to pass under Route 80 and then another left to drive parallel to Route 80 West for a very short distance until you see the parking lot on your right.  The signs at the parking lot specifically mention campsites but I've no idea where the site is itself.

>>Warning<<:  I am not sure if the left turn to go under Route 80 is completely legal.  I have only done this route twice and from what I recall it seemed like the turn was into a one-way (going opposite to traffic) street, but I could be remembering it wrong.  Be very careful that you don't get into a head-on collision taking the above directions.

I'm in NEPA and haven't been able to make any of the HTF outings yet. If work allows, I'm game.

Lackawanna County.

(Sorry OP, just wanted to respond. Not trying to continue the hijack.)
