This happened to me a couple years ago.  It took 15 days. It has not happened since.

They have 10 days (business days, I think) to let you know the results and then I believe you can appeal if you like.

Last summer I had to wait the full 10 days on a S&W I bought from Cabela's.

For what it's worth, I've never passed with the "instant" check. At a minimum, they had to speak directly with someone in "research."

I had it happen to me one time, and they waited the full 15 days before approval.

I beleive that 15 days is the amount of time they can have for research.

It really depends on the name.
The three folks working there can't spell worth a shit!

I was held up and my FFl was like "Wait a minute, this guy is in here all the time. He is a cop and you are screwing this up".
He asked for a supervisor and two minutes later......PICS approval number is........
Sometimes it is all in the way it is handled.

Wait until you get denied.....that happened to me.
It took three weeks for them to find out that they entered my DL number in wrong thus creating a "bad name" rejection....

Lot's of luck....

+1

I was denied through PICS a few years back and I honestly thought my long-time PA FFL (Ken Crane) was kidding with me when he told me.  At the time, I don't think I even had a speeding ticket against me.

The first frustration was having to wait for the letter they sent me to even find out what they "thought" I had done to make it on the naughty list.  Even though I had provided my SSN initially, they still got tripped up when someone with the same name  apparently got a PFA order against them.  I finally got it and I ended up having to write a letter to them with a copy of my DL and PA LTCF saying, "no, I'm not that guy." Then a while later I got a reversal letter.  Everytime I bought a firearm in PA after that, I brought the letter along with me, but I never had another problem.
