Does PA have a personal property tax for individuals on motor vehicles? In NE, we pay it every year at the time we register the vehicle and it is contingent on the vehicle's value. How are property taxes in Wilkes-Barre/Hanover area? For perspective, I'm currently paying about $1k per year on property valued at $55k. Thanks guys! |

I don't know about property values in that part of the state but vehicle registration is that and there is no "personal property tax" on them. Cars, including station wagons (Suburbans and 4Runners are station wagons) are $36.00. Trucks (anything with an open bed) are based on weight and prices can be found here: PDF with prices Trailers, tractors, buses, etc. are included in that PDF as well. |
Not 100% familiar with the law on that but I do know Allegheny County (where Pittsburgh is) was able to have a 1% increase in sales tax (7% instead of 6%). I don't believe municipalities are permitted to do such a thing (never run into it across the whole state) and I'm sure Philly county (which I believe is also 7%) and Allegheny had to get state approval. We also have firearm preemption laws in the state. Philly passed a bunch of gun control laws a few months ago and really does not have a leg to stand on. If they were to arrest you and charge you with violating them the state could lay the smack down on them so they were mostly "symbolic." |

Wilkes Barre, Hanover i.e. Luzerne County is presently going through a reassesment and over 50% of properties are doubling or tripling in assesed value! There is a big uproar over it! Luzerne county is one of the most corrupt in the state but in recent months all the dirt is coming out on the low life politicos! |
Yeah, Philly is at 7% for sales tax. I live/work here. |
They just did that about five to six years ago here in Allegheny County. It was quite screwed up and some of the mistakes they made were well...pretty bad. They had empty lots in not so great neighborhoods going for 250K. Oops. My property value increased slightly. So to make up for that the local school district has increased their "millage" to make up for it. That is why the wifey and I are planning on getting out and away from "cities." |
