I went to buy a new handgun a few weeks ago, last Friday in March to be exact, and got delayed. I was like WTH, but whatever. Gun dealer told me it`ll take up to fifteen business days. Ok Last Thursday rolls around my gun dealer calls up and says that I got DENIED!!!!! Now I`m really pissed off. I never in my lifetime have committed any act that would religate me to this status. On top of all that I have an ACT 235 card, am an armored car guard, and even more so my job in located in NJ, where I have a NJ work carry permit. I`d like to think I check out pretty damn good at this point I went to the dealer for the challenge form, and sent it in the same day, on last Thurs. Now I haven`t heard a word from the state police as of yet but my dealer said it could take a little while. Now here`s the part thats making me think, I`m buying a B&T TP9 from Lock`s Gun Exchange in Philly, I also live in Philly (this may change soon) does anuone think this has something to do with this BS nutter is trying to pull? |

I was denied once when I lived in Delaware County. Turns out that my name was "close enough" in the system to someone who had a protection from abuse order against them. Because of that, I had to wait for the official denial letter from the state and then reply to it in writing and then wait for the official reply letter. I forget the timeline, but it took me a bit before I could go pick up my rifle. If you have a fairly common name, the PICS system can give you some trouble. |
Re-running the check won't resolve the issue, it could just make it worse. Once the someone gets a "DENIAL" they need to go through the challenge process, otherwise it looks like someone is trying to work around the system. Even if there was an error in keying your info that caused your denial, chances are that your correct information is now linked to negative/criminal information. This guy just needs to go through the red tape process and get it reversed so that there are no future problems and no visits from LE wanting to take your firearms and possibly you. Trust me. |
If you're going through the official challenge process, you're doing the only thing that you need to/can do. As I stated in my earlier response, you'll get a letter from them with the official reason why you were denied... in my case, it listed a Protection From Abuse Order for some dude with the same name who lived in a lovely section of Philly. I had to provide a letter stating that I wasn't him. I'm suspecting you'll need to do the same. Once you have a reversal, they'll send you an official reversal letter and you'll need to take that letter to your FFL and that'll be that. They'll re-run the background check and let the operator know that you have a PICS reversal letter and you'll be approved. You'll definitely want to hang onto that letter just in case you ever have a problem again. Because I'm a negative-thinking SOB, I brought a copy of the letter with me for the next few firearm purchases that I made, but they all went off without a hitch and I never needed it again. |
Nope, just make a copy of your reversal letter for your dealer to keep on file. Sorry to hear about the other news. ![]() |

Career suggestion.... Once hired, find out what the minimum vesting time is for pension. Gravitate to a specialty that is useful in the suburbs ie. accident reconstruction or traffic safety. Post out to the burbs ASAP... Here is how you should do it..... 21-31 PPD 31-51 Municipal Dept in the Burbs While in this assignment get your masters degreee and get appointed to the FBI National Academy for municipal command officers. 51-62 Take Chief or command officer's job in another Municipal Dept. Study to be an EMA coordinator while Chief. So at 62 you can retire with the following: PPD pension Municpal PD pension 1 Municipal PD pension 2 Social Security Now if you want to still work for what ever reason, you can take an EMA job either with the County, School or municipality..... |
whats wrong with three?,.. if i stay the course i'll end up with three as well,. diffrent line of work than Spree,. but all of it wearing a uniform of some sort under DD at least i should not have to rely on SS,. it would be nice to get some of the money i have put into it over the years back,. but i know it will never happen. if i work hard and stay right (basically don't get killed along he way) hopefully i should be able to spend a few years watching the grandkids run around before i check out to Fiddlers Green for good. |
This advice is spot on. I don't know anyone whose attended the FBI National Academy that retired and had to eat stewed tomatoes and bread. I'd add in maxing out your 457B (or whatever) plan from the start, and possibly modifying the plan to include other specialties that are in high demand in the public sector. Corporate Security, Information Security, Information Technology, whatever. Just look at what's in demand private sector wise, and position yourself as quickly as possible to get the PD to start training you for a second career on their dime. Getting in should be considered ONLY THE VERY FIRST step of your plan..... --Fargo007 |
