[ARCHIVED THREAD] - LRGC March Shoot (Page 1 of 2)

When is the LRGC shoot for march?  Isn't the 3rd weekend Easter?

Couple questions about the shoot.

How many rounds do you shoot at the 200yd line?

What are the targets and size--i think you shoot at paper bags but how big and are they cut out like a silloete?

I'm just trying to decide if an eotech 3x magnifier is worth the expense for only a couple rounds shot at the 200yd line.  I have a suppressed 11.5" colt that i use as my go to gun and never ever expect to shoot it for real out to 200yds.  I practice mostly at 50 and 100 and have no problems without the magnifier.

I guess i'll just have to come out to a shoot and see what goes on and then make the decision about a $500 magnifier.

Thanks

Hi,

Allow me to hijack the thread by adding a generic announcement that answers your question, and provides general info I'll have to post anyway

Our next shoot is March 29th, starting at 10am.  The total course of fire is around 150 rounds, and ranges from 15 yards to 200.  We assemble on the long range, which is found by turning 180 after coming through the main gate, proceeding down the 1 lane stone road (carefully), go through the orange swing-gate, and proceed to the range.

If the lot is full, there is additional parking available - just drive past the firing line, and turn right.  There's a big open area there.

There will be a precision CoF this shoot.  It will be called separately, but run in complete congress with the practical firing line from a safety perspective.  You can shoot either the practical CoF, or the precision.  Precision fire will start after the close-in stages of practical.   No pistol stage is scheduled for March.

It's subject to change, but for now there is anticipated to be 36 rounds at 15Y, and higher round count at 100Y than at 200Y.

A LOT of guys shoot either irons or eotech/aimpoints with us, and turn in great scores.  IOW, the magnifier's not necessary.  Just a little practice at 200 will get you very comfortable there.  The swinging steel is great feedback for this.  Yes, our targets are paper size equals of a fullsize cardboard IDPA sil. with more stringent scoring stadia, but keeping them all-on at 200 isn't the hardest thing in the world to do with the EOtech .   ETA - You'll be scored in a class with shooters who use a similar optic.  Three classes:  1 - Magnified.  2 - Non Magnified electronic Dot, 3 - Irons.

LE shooters are now authorized by the Board of Trustees to compete with a duty rifle that is select-fire so long as it is used on semi-auto only.

Civilian shooters with other types of NFA items are welcome.  Remember to travel with a copy of your stamp.

New this month - Chamber flags are now MANDATORY EQUIPMENT.  If you do not have one, you can rent one from  the club for the day.

There is a short safety checkout for those joining us for the first time.  Arrive by 9:30.

All rifles are to be brought to the firing line IN A CASE.

Other equipment needed:

An already zeroed Centerfire rifle (appropriate for either the practical or precision course)
150 rounds of ammo (hint - if you want to get rid of some inaccurate stuff, use it up on the CQ stages)
3-5 magazines (bring them unstacked, we load to stage requirements as we go)
Range Safety gear (eyes/ears)
Inclement weather gear (we shoot rain or shine)
Paper shopping bags as replacements to cut down on the target costs
Binos - spotting scope (in case you lose track of which target is yours)
Sharpie marker
Stapler, and its ammo
$10 members, $15 public attendees.
A shooting mat, or a tarp to cover up part of the firing line helps a lot.  It's dirty.  Don't come directly from church.

As always, we look forward to a safe, challenging, and fun day together.

I attended last months practical at LRGC with my colt 11.5 SBR and did fairly well with it! As long as your rifle is already sighted in you can easily score good hits @ the 200yd CoF. There is a good mix of AR's on the line and all the Eotech shooters competed w/o the magnifier and did really well, even with the hanging steel! I hope to see you and that fine SBR at the march shoot. Be prepared to have a fun day. The RSO's make sure the line is ultra safe and the group of guys and girls who shoot are great!    Dan

Thanks for the feedback guys.  Like i said, i'll hold off on the magnifier and decide after i get out and shoot a course.  My eyes just aren't what they used to be and i have never shot past 100yds with the eotech.

556sniper, yeah i love my colt le 6933--it is a fine little pony.  I use a tac-16 suppressor on mine.  It quites it down a good bit and still isn't any longer than a 16" barrel.  The suppressor does add some weight but nothing unbearable.  What ammo do you shoot in yours?  I use hornady tap 5.56 and i'm playing around with privi 75g match.  How much bullet drop do you get at 200yds out of the short barrel?

Thanks again guys.

200 and irons becomes not so difficult after a little practice :)

Its a good sound to hear steel ring when shooting from the irons at that distance.

Yeah i love my 6933 too! It would be nice to see your set-up with the suppressor as im in the market for one myself! I shoot the 55gr blackhills fmj and it seems to do well. Unfortunately i haven't sighted in past 50yds on paper as i only shot the shorty twice, however i plan on doing so in the near future! I have average eyesight and found after a few Cof"S @ 200yds my eyes seem to adjust well! The next shoot im going to be using my arsenal slr101 AK but I am interested in seeing how well you and that sexy Colt do at the shoot! Dan

TKD-II,

We look forward to seeing you.  I would hold off on the magnifier until after you shoot the course once.

Thanks Gary.  Sorry i missed the club meeting on the 6th to become a member.  I had a lot going on.  I'm hoping i can make the march shoot--you really got me interested when we talked at Dave's shop the other weekend.

I plan on being at this one guys.  Bringing the usual gear.  BTW - did they run that action pistol with carbines event yet?  If not, then when is it?

Looking forward the the stories from the three gun trip.  I will be doing the very next one scheduled if there is a group from LRGC going.  Had my fathers Birthday to attend so this one was not in the cards.

ok since it's closer then when I last wrote about it- here's a question.....

I'm home right now- and I'll be in philly starting monday until april- I was planning on driving down to LI to see the family from where my parents live in upstate NY- and to bring my M4 with me... but they shipped my sisters car out to hawaii already and I flew right into JFK.

Does anybody have any extra gear/weapon that I could borrow- if not it's not a problem and I'll probibly try to come on up to say hi and see the match since I'm planning on moving to philly soon anyway.

Irons, optics...doesn't matter, make, model, caliber.... Just need something to shoot- If someone can help me out just shoot me a PM with the caliber so I can pick up ammo when I get down there.

Like I said, I'm sure I'll shoot up there anyway- I was planning on bringing my gear from Hawaii and my M4 from at home but......

Roth,

I'm sure someone can help you out.  I'd suggest factory 5.56mm.  non-Wolf as some guys are funny about shooting steel through their guns.  We usually always have an extra AR in the group.

Roth, You provide the ammo and I'll provide the gun.  I'm always willing to help out a fellow shooter, especially when they're a fellow service member.  Oh, and I have no problems with you shooting Wolf or any other brand through my guns either (all I ask is that it's factory ammo).

My spare gun right now is a 16" RRA in .223 w/ ACOG.

Just look for the orange truck with Texas plates.

Okay guys, Saturday will be upon us soon.

I have another question, fargo---lastdefender

What is the age requirement to shoot?  My soon to be 14yr old son wants to attend the shoot---could he and i split off stages and me shadow him on the up close stages?  If that doesn't fly, can he come and be a spectator?  He is not a roamer and would stay put where told to be while i was on the line.  Do you have waver forms for minors?  I certainly understand the liability but he is very familiar with the ar platform and this would be something fun we could do together. Just wondering.

Thanks guys.

I think it's great to have a young shooter join us.  My instinct is to have him spectate for the first one, since it's both of your first times shooting with us.

After the match, we'll run him through a brief checkout and get him on the line next month.

Thanks Fargo--that is what i told him as well since we are both new to the group and have not seen a COF yet.  I figured i'd ask though just to get a feel for your thoughts about it.  He is very good around firearms and knows the rules---heck, some days he shoots better than me (not that that is that hard )---he is even shooting the FA uzi better than me at times too.

thanks again.

Trout seasons opening day is the 29th!! DAMN! For some reason i thought it was the 30th! NO! Opening day is the same day as the match. and i love to fish just as much as my love for firearms.

Now im truely torn as to what to do......go fishing on opening day or the match. ARG! opening day only comes once a year too.

Yeah this is really a dilemma for me. I would love to do both, but i know if i get started on one i will not get to the other. as both choices are just to good to do only for a few hours.

ill have to look into the times for fishing, but i believe it is 9am.

Hey guys, how many people usually show up?  I have a soft pretzel place near my home and if they are open when i drive by in the am, i'll pick up a few for snacking on.  So, 25-50 pretzels gonna cover everyone?

Oh, one more thing, i don't have any paper bags---everything is plastic these days---should i just bring some regular targets?  I picked up the chamber flag earlier in the week so i got everything except the bags.

Can't wait to get out and give this a try and meet some of you all.

I've got 30-40 paper bag targets ready to go. (you have to ask for them these days)
3/28/2008 8:39:33 AM EDT

We usually have 20-30 people including spectators.  Sometimes as many as 40-50 on a big match.

If you bring snacks for everyone like that, I will comp your match fee on GP for being a gentleman.  There's a couple other people who bought us lunch last time that have earned a ride tomorrow too.

We're pretty good on the targets.  You'll get a good look at how we make them.

See everybody tomorrow.

Round count for precision is about 50-60 rounds tops.  There's a shooter vs. shooter at the end of it so there's no telling how long that will go.  Other than that there are 36 rounds accounted for.

Practical is around 150, with 36 at close range (get rid of your junky ammo).

If you're shooting for the first time with us, please arrive by 0930 for a brief safety checkout.  Opening ceremonies (pledge, prayer, and safety briefing) begin at 1000.

If you don't have a chamber flag, you can rent one for the day.

We have a great course of fire planned, with 7 stages for practical shooters, and 7 for precision.  You can shoot either but not both.

Thanks, and see you tomorrow!

I just wanted to say what a great time i had yesterday.  Thanks too all the LRGC members that put this event on.  The whole shoot was a great experience!!!  Being new to the event, the staff went out of their way to explain the rules, COF, and answered any and all of my questions.  You have a great group of "staff--volunteers" that really like to shoot and help the first timers.  Thank you again.

Also, i'd like to say it was great getting to meet  you guys--it is always cool to put faces to the screen names on the board.

My 14yr old son was very happy that he got to bang steel after the event was over---he is looking forward to giving it a try next month.  Now that we know what to expect, i'll work with him in those areas a little over the next month to get him up to speed.

Thanks again for putting on a very professionally run event.  I had a blast.

Glad you guys liked the pretzels.

Nice shooting by everyone.  The second relay crushed the first in total points, but it had more people in it.  The first relay had a higher average score by 5 points or so.

Best of the day award goes to Craig, who CRUSHED it with his open sighted GI style A2.

Nice one by Paul R too, besting me for the top spot with a borrowed rifle.  .... . I'm in trouble when he gets his own rig down here....

Precision will be posted later on.  Off to church.

Wow, i finished 3rd in the dot class---i thought i did ok but never figured on 3rd.

Fargo, i have a question on scoring
Didn't we shoot 15rnds each at the 100-200yd rop?  How did some score higher than 75?  Isn't the max points per hit 5?  I guess someone could have shot at the wrong target and up'd the score.  It's no big deal, i just want to make sure that i am correct that the max points per hit is 5.

Thanks again for a great time.  Can't wait till the next shoot.

3/30/2008 9:04:19 AM EDT
[#44]
Yes, the max per target would be 75 points.  There is one that reported a 78, and an 85.  It doesn't change the standings though it does lessen the severity of the beating I took.

Reposted, and good catch btw.

ETA:  Precision scores are up.  Good shooting guys.

thanks fargo,

Like i said, i wasn't worried about the scores posted--like i said, someone could have hit the wrong target.  My main concern was that i was scoreing myself correctly in that 5 was the max score per hit.

While i am a little competitive, i like to judge myself on my performance each time out.  When my son and i shoot clays, i worry more about how many i break than how well i do overall---as we all know with shooting, some days are better than others.  Some days i get the clays and some days they get me.  All i can say is that on my bad days, i'm glad i don't have to rely on my shooting to put food on the table.
