In the next couple of months I'll be leaving the West Coast for the East Coast. I'll probably end up in either New Jersey or the Philly, PA area. All of my firearms were purchased in the L.A. area over the last 7 years. As a result, I don't have anything too crazy, just some handguns and a couple rifles, including an AR.

What can I expect when I move? Do I need to register anything? Is anything banned?  I can only imagine the laws are more agreeable than they are here. I'm not moving to Mass or New York, for instance. Is there anything I CAN'T bring with me? Can I look forward to improving and expanding my collection with things I can't own here?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

DON'T MOVE TO NJ!!!  They have ridiculous laws just like CA.

Move to Pa and you won't have to do anything.  No gun registration, no banned guns, no worries.

Oh, and don't move into Philly, they don't like guns there and a scared of them.

Move to PA. You will not have to register anything. You can own real weapons here aswell as NFA. Full Auto, Suppressors, SBS's, SBR's, etc. No state AWB. Nothing is really banned in PA.

You are going to spend a fortune getting rid of your restricted capacity magazines and buying Standard/Full Capacity magazines.  Hint: Give them, just give them at little or no cost to a vendor who also works in Joisey.

And the first time you go to a Fun Show and you see a vendor selling machine guns or suppressors you just might mess your pants.

And stay away from Philley!

Moving from California to NJ is like moving from Afghanistan to Iraq.  Do yourself a favor and move to PA, but stay out of Philly!

Wow! Exactly the help I was looking for. Thanks to all who replied. I think the scales have tipped- PA it is.

What is the deal with Philly? If I live within the city limits, what are the restrictions? They can't be worse than here! Anyhow, I'm pretty sure we'll be moving to the 'burbs. And I'm already itching to see a real Funshow for the first time in years.

Thanks again. I look forward to rejoining the free world.

No actual restrictions: No CLEO signoffs for NFA, and they make it as difficult as they legally can to issue a License to Carry.
The city HAS to follow state law, they're NOT happy about it, and if they could they would ban everything that could shoot including drinking straws.

PA no question.  When you come here it will be like you have been released from the prison of Kalifornia. PA is still a gun freedom state.  Avoid Philly at all costs.  If you have to be near Filthidelphia live outside the city.  Prepare to spend assloads of money on real non AWB guns, mags, ammo etc.

A few more facts you ough to know.  Philly is making it more difficult than before to get a conceal carry permit. If you live in the city, you get the privilege of paying the 4.2% wage tax -  your auto insurance will be approx. 40% higher than if you lived in the surrounding burbs. The cost of housing has gone up 30 to 50% in the last 5 years.
Move somewhere outside the shity of Philly.
