Last week the wife told me she found a baby mouse or rat on the patio, she thought maybe a bird had dropped it.
This week I found three juveniles in the same spot,
Got into the attic and saw no evidence that they were in there so they are probably in the ficus tree that is over that portion of the roof.
Best way to control them? We have dogs so poison is out.

Pack rats?  I used a have-a-heart trap to catch a dozen or so that were in my attic.  I caught them with the trap and then drowned them in the trap by submerging it into a bucket of water.

I'm pretty sure they're roof rats since we have citrus trees and the grapefruit are getting eaten, plus the tree in question has a lot of empty grackle nests.

My Brittanies were paying close attention to my hot tub Friday night, so I set a trap last night and a small one was caught early this AM.
I caught a big one about 6 months ago. I go through this a couple times a year. They set up shop inside my hot tub skirting, come out at night and eat fruit off my bushes.
Bird seed seems to work the best, but have also had good results with peanut butter.

First  step is to trim the tree, that's how they get in, any branches that touch the roof or go above the roof, need to go.

they can jump a long ways so you would need to cut the tree back a fair distance.  Anyway, wouldn't be surprised that they can climb stucco walls.

Getting rid of their food source is the best way to get rid of them, esp. if your neighbors keep their fruit on the tree and never pick them.

Poison is the best way to get rid of them assuming they are not inside your house.  Are you sure your dogs wouldn't even bother with a roof rat, dead or alive?

I tried snap traps, I got about twice as many birds as I did rats.

Go to Wally world and get the 5 dollar Tomcat trap. Put a couple pieces of dog food in the middle. My friend caught 5 in 3 days. He said they love the dog food.

I'm in pest control. You can get some traps and put peanut butter on them. Rats are skittish by nature so you may not want to set the trap the first go around so they get used to it. Place it along the wall or a corner. Peanut butter is really good because it's sticky and they have to work at it raising the chance of them setting the trap.

Find their nest and remove it or another will take its place.

wet dog food or some kibble?  Birds might find it less appealing than peanut butter.
