I finally escaped California and moved the family out to phoenix (Anthem actually). We were out here 4-5 times a year anyway visiting family so it made sense.
I looking forward to exploring the area. In the mean time I'd welcome any info or recommended places to visit gun related and otherwise. It would be great to hear from fellow transplants about any not so obvious differences specifcally legally speaking. I'm doing a lot of reading but it's a lot to sort through and absorb. I'm definitely open to any gun shop recommendations or any I should avoid especially those in the north valley. Thanks for any info, Khris |

Welcome! Ben Avery is one of the largest municipal ranges in the SW if not country, minutes from your home. Shooting on BLM desert land is cool, check fire restrictions (further west on the AZ74 or north to Bloody Basin on I-17) Firearm related, it's probably legal. Permitless concealed carry. Exceptions bars, state/govt buildings, Indian reservations, school property, no-firearms businesses with signs. We do not have waiting periods, magazine restrictions, registration or any BS like that. All NFA goodies are good to go with proper paperwork. A silly weapon exception is nunchucks are illegal unless on the way to a sanctioned martial arts event. Automatic knives, switchblades, stilettos are perfectly legal. No Molotov cocktails or the ingredients with the intent to make though.
The CCW allows purchasing firearms from dealers with no call-in for background check and carrying in bars with no signs as long as you don't drink. Go through DPS/ Dept of Public Safety (bascially state highway patrol) http://www.azdps.gov/services/concealed_weapons/ Get an AZ ID once a resident for backpage if you want to do private transactions. Legal private party transactions between AZ residents over 18 as long as you don't have knowledge that they're a prohibited possessor, no paperwork legally required though some do a bill of sale. Open carry is legal. You may see people with a pistol on their hip in public. Some (not all) will look silly with a Hi-Point in a nylon holster, but it's everyone's right and pay no attention as long as they're being adults. Other than that I'll add Turf Paradise opens on 17th Ave/Bell on Saturday through April if you like horse races (check for family fun days and reduced price hot dogs/beer) and take the kids under 10 to McCormick Stillman Railroad park in Scottsdale if you have any. Edit for clarity/grammar |

Where in CA did you move here from? I came from north Orange County area.
I moved here Sept 29 2005, so i just celebrated my 10 years here. When I got here, I got all the guns I did not want to register back from where I had stored them in Oregon. And then I got more! Welcome to the most firearm and NFA friendly place in the US! |

Thanks for the replies. I've been To Ben Avery in the past, very nice facility, I'll be there often. I'm also on the look out for a good BLM spot to shoot as I'm more of a fan of shooting steel and off hand shooting rather than bench. Speaking of BLM land, is that the only place legal to shoot or are there other open areas?

We moved from Temecula (south riverside county) but I worked in San Diego. My wife and I were both in the Navy and I'd been in the San Diego area since 2001. |

Grew up around that area, and still visit my parents there frequently. Its a nice place to raise a family. Plenty of good shooting spots up there as well.
Welcome to Az, and forget everything about California. this ain't California, and the quickest way to piss off an Arizonan is to say "Back in Cali". Brace for snowbirds! The good news is its open season on them and there is no bag limit or tagging requirements. Amega shooting sports off of Carefree highway by the Dennys plain sucks, 9 out of 10 times you are better off going to sportsman's warehouse on 17 and union hills for some ammo or last minute necessity. Tombstone is just a little further south on the 17. Welcome to the area, and if you have any questions, shoot me a PM. I spent a long time in Anthem before all the development started when it was just a Safeway and an elementary school. |

Been here a year, previously lived in CT and Maryland. This is a good place.
Tombstone Tactical has some good stuff, prices don't seem too bad. Bell Rd. Pawn (Bell and 25th St., I think, on the north side of Bell) does transfers for about $15 IIRC. Liking this place so far!! |

She's found 3 in the house so far and I've killed about 10 around the outside of the house using a UV light. I'm not worried at all but shes practically having anxiety attacks When you say Bell rd Pawn does transfers for $15 do you mean out of state shipped in transfers from online retailers? If so that's cheap!!! Speaking of, when I order online does the local FFL charge you sales tax? |

You might want to look into getting some Cy-Kick to help control the scorps. Buy a back pack sprayer and saturate your property. It will eliminate the stinging bastards themselves, but more importantly it will rid your property of their food source, crickets. Welcome to the greatest state in the republic.... Please join AzCDL.
