Hi guys, I made an account just to post this. Please read it and write to the legislators!

If you support the 2nd amendment you may be very interested in a bill protecting Arizonans’ right to carry.  The bill is scheduled for a vote Monday afternoon in the Arizona Senate: SB 1063 {http://www.azleg.gov/DocumentsForBill.asp?Bill_Number=1063&Session_Id=112}. SB 1063 ensures that if a public place of business posts a “no guns allowed” sign but does not provide the requisite storage lockers to patrons (again - current law), the lawful gun owner may not be prohibited at that point from carrying inside that business.  Some businesses are ignoring their part of the law – providing storage lockers while continuing to proclaim their businesses ‘gun-free zones’.  This is unlawful and SB 1063 aims to close that gap in current law. SB 1063 failed on a tie vote last week and will receive a reconsideration vote on Monday.  Here is the link {http://www.azleg.gov/MemberRoster.asp?Body=S} to send an e-mail to Arizona Senators requesting they support SB 1063. There are several other pro-2nd amendment bills moving in the Senate next week, too: see  Arizona House passes 2 pro-gun bills {http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/politics/2014/03/12/arizona-house-passes-2-pro-gun-bills/6351063/}. They will be on the Senate Judiciary agenda {http://www.azleg.gov/agendas/03170155112.pdf} on Monday FYI. Nationally speaking:  as the President’s budget continues to decrease U.S. defense spending, withdraw troops on a timeline, ignore red lines, etc,  how is the U.S. perceived?   Clearly our enemies are emboldened...Here’s a Quote worth re-quoting: "Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives." --James Madison, letter to W.T. Barry, 1822

IIRC that bill does not apply to PRIVATELY owned businesses, it applies to city/couny/state owned buildings with some exceptions.  PUBLIC means government owned in the law.

Ms, Barto.....PLEASE read ALL bills before you vote on them. For your convenience the changes in wording proposed in SB1063 are highlighted in BLUE on the attached document
http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/51leg/2r/bills/sb1063p.pdf
From ARS-13-3102 Definitions:

2. "Public establishment" means a structure, vehicle or craft that is owned, leased or operated by this state or a political subdivision of this state.

3. "Public event" means a specifically named or sponsored event of limited duration that is either conducted by a public entity or conducted by a private entity with a permit or license granted by a public entity. Public event does not include an unsponsored gathering of people in a public place.

It is the STATE that is being forced into compliance with existing laws....NOT private business.
Is it any wonder many people are losing faith in our government entities.

Nancy,

Sorry, if I'm off topic.  I've also been disgusted by the loud no guns signs.  I called Barros pizza to complain about the new addition of their signs tonight.  The manager I talked to inferred it was because of pressure from the liquor board.  Is this something to look into?  Are these businesses being pushed politically?

Thank you,

Jon

I've heard the same thing before from other businesses, but they're not willing to go up against the inspectors that tell businesses that because they can use their bureaucratic power to pull their licenses.

Am I understanding this correctly?  The law to require gun lockers will apply only to public venues.  Isn't this a step in the right direction?  How could you require an extra expense to a private business???

Until it is more costly to shun gun owners than the inspectors the signs will stay I guess.  Maybe the problem is with the liquor board or inspectors?

My understanding is that it has to do with the "type" of liquor license they have... Just like we have different FFL's with different requirements they have different LL types with different requirements. And yes this applies to ONLY "pubic" areas, if the "state" tries to force a private business into compliance i would be 100% against that. As a small business i want the right to say yes or no to what happens in my business. Win, lose or draw on MY terms

Sen. Barto -

Thank you for your support of the 2nd amendment.

Please consider submitting an amendment to line 19 - 22
"19 A member of the sheriff's volunteer posse or reserve organization
20 who has received and passed firearms training that is approved by the Arizona
21 peace officer standards and training board and who is authorized by the
22 sheriff to carry a concealed weapon pursuant to section 11-441."
to include AZ CCW holders.  Citizens who hold a valid CCW permit have had extensive background checks performed and should be considered as one of the "good guys".
