I didn't want to hijack a similar thread about the refresher course, but we will be moving to the Tempe/Phoenix area in January and my wife will need to get her CCW. What will she have to go through to get it? Also she is a current CCW here in AL and as of the most current info I have read AZ honors that, but since we will be changing everything over to AZ residents does anybody know how long she will have to get her AZ CCW so she will be legal. Myself, I should be fine either way. I'll have active LEO creds or possibly retired LEO creds. It just depends on the route I decide on or the route that decides on me. Also this may be a little early to worry about, but the devil's in the details right. This will be the first "official" course she's had to go to so is there a place that is family friendly that will allow me to sit in with her at the classes and range time just to put her more at ease? We may have a little time before either of us report to work so if she's up for it and it's needed quickly we may get it done right off. Thanks for any info folks!

AZ has "Constitutional Carry" so no permit is required for the most part. The class(es) from Independence linked in the other thread will fit all of your requirements/wants/needs.
If i might make a suggestion....send her without you. You might be surprised at how well she responds...or take the class yourself. LEO creds are fine and good as a minimum requirement, but like I said AZ dies not require anything.....that does not mean we as individuals should not take a higher road and train often.

Your wife does not need to obtain an AZ CCW permit to carry concealed.  Although permits are issued by the state they are not required to carry or conceal.

Hey thanks for the quick replies folks! They are greatly appreciated! I know I could have looked up the laws on my own, but to me hearing it from those who have been there/done that and have the experience goes a whole lot further. See you folks in a few months.

Constitutional carry is gold but having the permit as a CYA is golden.

Yes it is. And having an AZ permit gets you into the fast lane at 4473 time. Her current permit won't do that. Since constitutional carry is in effect it's kind of moot, but she as a resident would need an AZ permit to carry. Her current card would no longer have been honored because she's now an AZ resident.

She won't have to take the class, she can use her old permit to apply for the AZ one.

There are a number of reason to have a ccw permit in AZ.
I was asked last week if I would appear and speak to the committee which is re-writing the CCW laws in AZ and I of course agreed.  Two of the Attorneys on this committee have signed up for Mas Ayoobs Class in Tucson which is a good thing.

1. Restaurants serving alcohol- a permit allows you to carry a concealed weapon  in Restaurants that serve alcohol providing they haven't legally posted a no guns sign.  Among the restaurants you can carry a concealed firearm is are Chili's, Macaroni Grill, Pea Wei, Casa Molina, and the great majority of Mexican Restaurants in the Valley.
2. National Parks, there is a bit of a cloud around this, but although you might be able to open carry in some areas you will not be able to carry concealed in National Parks without a AZ permit.
3. Reciprocity.  as of today 38 states recognize the AZ permit.
4, Near schools. (Federal gun Free School Zones Act)  A permit gives you the ability to carry within 1,00 feet of a school.
5. City of Phoenix ordinances prohibits the carrying of a firearm in a city park of 1 square mile or less whee posted.  Carrying a firearm is limited to persons who possess a permit pursuant to ARS 13-3112.
6. Background Checks. This was mentioned by several in this thread.
7.  It immediately distinguishes the good guys from the bad guys in most altercations with the police.  I work daily with police and nearly all of them breath a sigh of relief when they stop a car and the driver has a CCW permit.  To them it means the person has had a viable background check and is a good guy.

*. and possibly the most important reason s Legal Defensibility.  I have had to testify to a local prosecutor in the defense of my student who defended himself and was able to show how the student knew exactly what A O j meant and that he followed the ruled.  Next, several of our members on this site have been defended and their CCW instructors played a large part in their being  defended in court.  One of them had Massad Ayoob come down to defend him, successfully, and his having had a CCW permit was one of the reason Mas decided to come to his aid.

In each case I have testified or assisted Mas in one of his cases I wondered how a person would do in court facing Dan Niccollini in Pima County or John Rood in Maricopa county if they were on their own.

Anyway these are my thoughts on the subject.

Looks like it's already been covered, but +1 for taking the course and getting a permit even though it's' not required.
I don't travel much, but the reciprocity is a big plus.
And, it's instant credibility... a permit holder has been background checked and printed, so having one identifies you as responsible.  At the very least, permit holders are NOT felons.

Again thanks for all the info folks! She will be taking the course and getting the CCW ASAP, but in the mean time I'm just glad it's not required. From everything I've heard overall about AZ from multiple sources I think we are going to love it there. One other question about weapons. How does having a firearm work in your POV. Does she have to  CCW or can it be just in the car in a bag of some sort or does it have to be one her? Also is there a law in place that allows an employer from preventing an employee from having a weapon in their POV on the employer's property? It just changed here in AL that prevents the employer from preventing the employee from having a weapon in their car. AL has come a long way in the past year to clear a lot of weapons issues up. Thanks again for all the info!

Quick question - I have a Utah CFP and a Florida CCW.  Do the two permits I have suffice in place of an AZ CCW for the items above?

Arizona does not require a CCW to carry concealed. Anyone who can legally own a gun can carry open or concealed. You can have a fully loaded pistol/ar15/MAC10 whatever on your front car seat and be within the law. Basically don't brandish a weapon or carry in the few restricted areas (schools, court house etc.) you are good to go.

It takes a while for anyone coming from a less free state to grasp the freedom we have in Arizona.
