I just got an assignment to move to Tuscon. I've lived in CA for the last 1.5yrs, GA, AK, Korea and NC before that.
I'll be there in April.
I know about the gun laws, so that's badass, and I know a bunch of friends already statoned there, just looking to get as much info as possible about the area.
What can you tell me about the area? I'm 31, single (gf, but what's going to happen b/c of the move we haven't determined yet. She's a bartender and student.).
Stuff to do?
Areas to live/Areas to avoid? (I have a 60 mile 1 hour commute each direction now, I'd rather live somewhere cool and deal with the commute than close to the base and hate life)
Cost of living?
Tell me everything, please

there is an AZ ammo tax,  and on top of that a new local Tucson ammo tax when you get in the area... I get no less than 100 rnds (centerfire) plus 500+ rounds of 22LR (bulk pack ok).  I dont know who is collecting the current state level ammo tax is right now.

As far as things to see, my favorite is the Titan Missile Museum. other highlights include Kershner Caverns, Pima air and space museum, and the Desert museum.  Tombstone is ok... but a bit commercialized although the courthouse is cool and authentic.

Cost of living is lower depending on what size place you are looking for.  I would look for a place on the west side of the highway.  the further east you go the longer it takes to get to the highway and there are no expressways through town.

Consider the base as the border south of the base you will feel like your in mexico, Stay North ,North West, North East. Nice 2bd apt 800 as an average houses around 1000 to start.. Single scene not to bad according to my single buddies, lots of college girls when school is going summer they dry up.

I'm assuming you will be stationed at D-M.  Lot's of guys there live  east of there.

Biggest thing to know about Tucson is that it's the largest city in the country without a traffic management plan.   It's a lot like driving in Berkley actually.  Regardless of where you work or live it is very important to live on the same side of the railroad tracks as your job or you can get really screwed driving to work.

Come on Richard, don't play me like that.

OP, glad to know that we'll have another good guy on board. You'll love AZ, though you might not love Tucson. Either way, though, you are making a HUGE jump in freedom coming here from CA.

I work at the bio shop at dmafb. When do you plan on getting here?  Hit me up once you do. I usually go to reddington once a month to shoot.

If you are being relocated to DM, look for houses for rent cheap in Sahuarita - Green Valley area.

20 minutes to Tucson and 10 minutes to desert shooting/hunting!

I'm AMXS, I'll arrive around the second half of April.

Politics aside, I absolutely love CA. I'd never been here before, and didn't think I woudl like it at all, but its fantastic. Politics aside. Not exaclty a fan of that part. Plastic bags are banned in my county. It will defenitly be a big return to the free world.
