1) Google 'prions'

2) They'll make your balls swell if you eat them.

I don't know what the hell prions are but I've been eating squirrel since I was a kid and I ain't dead yet. With that said... Definitely wait until it gets colder. They pick up all kinds of parasites and shit during the warm seasons which mostly die off through the winter. Late January / early February is my favorite time to hunt small critters like squirrel and rabbit.

West of Clint's Well all the way to Flagstaff along Lake Mary Road, especially on the south side of the road - I used to hunt squirrels there long ago and it was always good hunting.

As mentioned above, don't eat small critters until after it starts freezing and killing all the sick ones. As for prions, I have eaten many a squirrel without getting sick. Maybe I didn't notice the swelling since I have big steel swingers? SM3 - are your balls okay after 'the incident'?

In my attic

Had a little bastard find his way in and had a rent free condo in the insuslation and christmas decoration boxes I had up there.
At first I expected a pigeon when I went up there to explore what was making all that noise, but as soon as I popped my head through the access, he came running at me and we both let out a little scream
Set up a trap and sent him off on his way in nice park....far far away
oh yeah, I live in Mesa.  Never expected to see any here, as there are no trees except the palm variety.

YMMV

squirrels are pretty thick up near christopher creek right now. Didn't see many on top of the rim though last week when I was up there.

Always had good luck south of Williams from Coleman lake to modesti tank also don't over look the jackass flats area and north of dogtown.

I have been taking tree rats for many years and never got sick.

I would give it a few more weeks the acorns should start to drop and activity will pick up

My boy cant go this year so I will sit this one out and Quail hunt close to home

Have a blast and enjoy

I don't know about prions but I figure if you cook it hot enough, it will kill it.  Anyhooo I'm heading up to the Big Lake area tomorrow and know those critters are plentiful up there and are in season as of today I believe.  I got some 22 shot shell to hopefully improve the chances my 6 year old can hit one and minimize the chances I die if he hits me lol (just kidding serious guys).  If we do well we will have some ready for the HTF shootout/beast feast in November!

Good luck to you and your son I started my son on tree rats at 6 also, he is 17 now and works so he cant make the trip, but he still loves any chance to go to the high country.

enjoy this man they grow up quick.

Prions aren't living organisms and aren't broken down by heat.

So I took the bait and looked it up. Very very unlikely in squirrels since they dont eat meat. even if they had it just dont eat the brains or mix them up with the meat and youre fine.

Abert squirrels are dependent on Ponderosa Pine.   Look for five or more large pines in a cluster, and clipped needle bunches on the ground.  Then chill out for a while quietly until they start moving again.

Absolutely incorrect.

And for brother rizzo...t'was not my nuts.  I'd have to be starving to eat a squirrel on purpose.

Back from my trip.  Ate four of those little critters.  Roasted em like a hot dog right over the fire at my campsite.  Not sure what heaven really is but I had to have been awfully close to it last week Those little critters are tasty.  My balls are still swinging normally and no new twitches from my nervous system are yet apparent but I'll follow up if the plague I have been warned of (but which is not mentioned at all by AZGFD) befalls me in the near future (assuming I am still capable of typing).

I found them to absolutely more active the first 2 hours or so from dawn and then again, but much much less so for an hour around dusk.  I was too lazy to get up and about every morning or I could have bagged my limit easily.  When I was up on time, my dog made it easy.  Even though she is not trained in her fervor she would tree them and make it easy for me to find the tree.  After that I would just wait for them to move.  If they didn't move for a while I could just send a round up the trunk which often gets them to move enough to nail em.

Again if I took the hunt all serious (including using some binocs), I could have bagged my limited daily but I ate enough to move on to fishing.  Squirrels are good but trout is still better

Ahhh prion, the malformed protein. Haven't heard of it in squirrel. Y'all know, mad cow disease or chronic wasting disease in deer. Humans can get it, though I don't know if it's possible from eating. Has there been a case?

I believe heat can destroy this protein, but that kinda heat is going to burn up skin, meat, and bone IOW the meat is no good if you don't wish to even risk contracting it (Again I don't know about cross species contamination.)

Squirrels really have it?
