So the wife and I drove up here to fly out of Sky Harbor. We arrived at the hotel and then headed down University Dr to find some dinner. Within about 15 mins we were almost in two accidents...one was an idiot who ran a red light a good two seconds after our light turned green... Another mile down the road we stopped because a bus was dropping people off and blocking the right lane. Heard squealing tires and looked into the rear view to see some dude almost sideways in an old beater trying to stop. Ate at sports bar across from Chilli's...hair in my food. Stopped at a gas station to grab a beer to enjoy in the hotel room...bum was asking for change and being a little agressive about it (okay so this is typical city). Got back to the hotel and the TPMS light came on....screw in the passenger rear tire. Yep...Phoenix sucks...

You got off light. I shoot at low flying airplanes. Every time I do, more appear, so it works out. Actually, I go to Table Mesa Rd usually. The danger is part of the fun. I'll keep an eye out for tracers flying by as we take off... Danger? This place is 2 1/2 hrs at least from the border...

That was you then, I thought I saw a shooting star tonight. Rio Salado is a nice place to shoot. Can't complain too much about a range that goes to 320yds with steel plates for ya. Never really find that in MN where I am originally from. Otherwise, there are some spots not too far a drive to go. |

How do you not work for Frommers with that critique?
You were in Tempe, not Phoenix. City busses are real big, obvious and they stop frequently. Shouldnt drive behind one. Going into any sports bar you shouldn't be expecting good food. Places with good food are called restaurants, or bistros, or grills, etc. Not nice to bad mouth someone's city. Unless its Yuma. |

Quoted: I'm country folk...and have great respect for those of you who put up with this BS every day. Where the heck do you shoot around here??? Phoenix sucks. THe cities around the edge aren't bad. I love chandler. I shoot out in the desert. About a thirty minute drive from here.(less than my commute to work) |

I'd be wiling to bet most members who have been there have had a bad experience. There used to be a group of Mexicans who were robbing people up there at gunpoint. Go up there on a weekend and it's literally a Wild West Show. You'll hear enough gunfire to make you think it's a bad day in Kabul, on top of every jackass with a quad or bike hauling ass on any road they find. Truly a modern day circus. |

I blame illegals. Exit off the I-17 on Indian School and just keep heading west bound, you won't believe what you see. You can't throw a paper airplane without hitting an illegal on that road. They must be spreading the word about that area and telling others to come because LE has given up on that place. They could be running a Taliban training camp there and we would never know. I don't head south of Cactus Ave if I can avoid it these days. North Phoenix is actually pretty calm the only time I wish I lived somewhere else is really late at night when I'm laying in bed and trying to sleep and its perfectly quiet and then all of a sudden I hear the bass of a car stereo.... WTF man its Tuesday night at one in the morning don't you have anything better to be doing than bumping the bass in a residential neighborhood. |

You stayed in an pretty scuzzy area. Everything along University near the airport is pretty sucky. So don't judge the entire city by that area. But yes, Phoenix is a big city and has big city problems. All large cities have the same problems: poverty, stupid people, smart people who have stupid moments, drugs, etc.
I grew up in a small town of 2500 people (no I didn't leave off a 0) in Hawai'i. So it was a huge change when I moved to Phoenix, but I loved it and the change it provided me (although I was 22 at the time). I've had my fun and really appreciate what a big city offers. Tons of concerts (I hit one every month), decent art scene, good resturants (some great ones) and excellent shopping. Right before I left my small town, everybody was excited (including myself) that Walmart was coming. Now I get excited because the Small Arms Review gunshow comes to town. I even have an uncle that flys in from Hawai'i to go to it. I live it chandler and appreciate being away from the city and close enough to reap the benefits. But I do miss home and intend to move back soon. As much as I have appreciated city life, I am getting ready to go back to the country. |
