My family and I will be heading towards AZ in less than two weeks. We have lived near Portland, Oregon for almost 40 years and looking for change. So this spring break we will head down through Cali to Phoenix and head North to Grand Canyon, over through Utah / Idaho and back to Oregon. I was interested in the Scottsdale area and maybe a bit more up North. But really know nothing about the state other than it's balls hot for a few months and the rest is fairly nice. Probably looking to rent for a year or two first if we end up there. We have young children 9,8,4 and are looking for nice middle class neighborhood $250,000-$350,000 with a pool.

We will be scouting the area for roughly a day or two, medium sized city with good air quality. Wife and kids have allergies and asthma can come on with sickness. Even though we are a conservative family, I am sure my wife would not be willing to have land, if that meant it wasn't fenced it to keep the critters out, so probably a subdivision of some sorts. In Oregon pollen and can be brutal, and I know AZ can be bad so, if we decided to move we would rent to make sure it was a good fit. AZ is gun friendly and that's important.

Any suggestions besides Scottsdale?

Not another Oregonian!  (like me)  Man I HATE Portland.

Gilbert/Mesa/Chandler and for the price range you should be able to get a kick arse home.

Alllergies...um yeah, I have them bad down here spring thru fall.  Never an issue up in Pea Soup country.

Just wondering. We get these threads all the time and the OP never seems to put what their job situation is. That is really critical as the valley is so wide (takes 2hrs to drive across w/ a little traffic). If you are retired or can work from home, that changes things a lot. I would totally move to north Scottsdale and you can get a nice house if you go way up north. But that puts you at the north edge of the valley with poor freeway access. It could take you over an hour each way to drive to work in downtown Phx.

Tell us just a little more and we'll help you out.

Sorry about that, I am looking for a job change I own a couple companies here in Portland that I will be leaving / selling in the cleaning industry. I have a web based company also, but on the ground floor right now. I will be spending the next 1 year or so, trying to build it up so I can work from home mostly. I would need high speed access or (close to it) for the internet. Also my wife may work, secretarial or health care, she has experience working for the state, and public education, payroll stuff like that. I have worked for myself for 20 years, may need to supplement my other income, but I am not sure yet. My experience is internet marketing, website development. My current companies deal with residential cleaning services, that I could always use as a fall back, but really looking for change.

I was going to say Chandler Gilbert etc, but like the previous individual said, it all depends on your job scenario. Commutes can be long and brutal. AZ is the traffic accident capital possibly because of the ridonkulous commutes people make to and from work. You can check out the school districts near your work place to see if that area can work for you. Once you know where you are working, and when you are working (if you are driving against traffic etc) then making a suggestion will be of some value to you. Else it doesnt matter if Scottsdale is the best place to live, but if you are working over an hour away in traffic, it gets old soon. Having said that welcome to Arizona. You will like it here.

250-350k will get you a VERY nice house out here, in just about any neighborhood you want.

Uh, if you want clean air, Phoenix isn't for you.  The Valley has some serious air quality issues.  I came from St. Louis, which is notoriously bad too, and I don't smoke, so I don't worry too much about it, but if you have lung issues, this might not be the spot.

If you like four mild seasons and a more laid back setting without the big city traffic and crime (not that we don't have some of it here), come on up and check out Prescott or the surrounding areas.

Hear hear for Prescott area.  I just bought a home north of Prescott Valley on a couple of acres but plenty of subs in PV.  Nice folks there, plus all the shopping/services.  I'm moving from SE Mich in 3 weeks.
