My bride and I moved to this great state almost 2 years ago. Never bothered with getting an AZ CCW, as we both already have them from other states (reciprocity). A couple of the states we have CCW's from are Colorado and Utah, which required testing (both range and legalities).
We want to go ahead and get our AZ licenses, but with as little hassle as possible. Our local range (Ted's) offers classes for this, and one is just a 2 hour class, for those that are proficient with a handgun. My wife and I are both quite proficient, so that's the class we are looking at. Then I noticed this when reading the requirements for AZ. It seems there is a 'mail in' issuance of the AZ CCW license for those that have: A valid current or expired concealed weapon, firearm or handgun permit or license that is issued by another state or a political subdivision of another state and that has a training or testing requirement for initial issuance. Anyone with knowledge of the laws know how (or if?) this works? Thanks in advance! |

Yes, it will work just fine.
Regardless, I recommend taking a course. Knowing and understanding the law, specifically AZ law, and when you can shoot is just as important, if not more important, than learning how to shoot. Is a 2 hour course sufficient? That's up to you. Personally, I prefer as much training as possible and I offer any student the same. Remember that the instructor you train with may very well be sitting on the stand in a court room one day, defending your actions and abilities. I had a very interesting conversation with the supervisor of the AZ DPS CWPU about this very same thing just last week. They are in no way, shape, or form excited about these 1 and 2 hour classes that people have been offering. But to each his own. |

I don't know how the the system works for "trading in" out of state permits, but I am fairly certain the moment you became an AZ resident your out of state permits were not valid for carry in AZ. Kind of a moot point once permit-less carry came into effect though.
I also 2nd Rizzo's recommendation on a longer class that goes in depth on the legal aspects of self defense shootings in AZ. |

Thanks for the helpful replies. We are already pretty well versed in the laws, but do intend to take the legal portion of the class at a more convenient time for us. Just wanted to get the licenses on the way for now. Your out-of-state permits will work for this, then. Call the AZ DPS Concealed Weapons Permit Unit and they will send you any paperwork that you need. You'll have to get your fingerprints done, and any local PD or county building can usually do this for a small cost, $2-$5 usually. The AZ permit itself will be $60. If you have problems with the AZ DPS CWPU, let me know and I can send you the paperwork you need, which is an application and a fingerprint packet. |
