Does anyone have any experience flying out of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport with a handgun in checked baggage?
I've already checked the TSA rules and US Airways rules. Mainly I'm looking to see what kind of experiences, good or bad, any of you may have had. Thanks. |

I have done it a few times. PHX is relatively hassle free, your destination might be a different story. Put it in a locking case separate from ammo, declare if at the counter, demonstrated that the chamber is clear, lock it up, hand it over. Usually you will need to pick it up at the baggage claim office, I have had my Glock end up on the carousel a couple times, so keep an eye out for that. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| Flew out of DCA last month on business to PHX took my 1911, what other gun to bring to AZ? Bag came out on carousel...no issues. On the return at Sky Harbor, did the normal routine, declared the unloaded firearm in the locked hard sided case. Delta check in person walked me to TSA, they did the explosives swipe of the locked case, took all of two minutes. They see plenty of firearms at Sky Harbor, both pistols and long guns. I have checked my pistol to numerous airports and always had my bag come out on the carousel, never had to pick it up at the baggage office. |
Flew out of PHX on Southwest with a .22 pistol, mags and 10 lbs of .22 and 9mm ammo to SLC. Used the info here from the TSA: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm and this from Southwest: http://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/baggage/special-luggage-pol.html#baggage_special_luggage_pol_tab_list_tab_7 Printed two copies of both. One with me and one with the pistol. Checked in, told them what I had. The fellow at check in had me open the case, he took a quick look at it and then had me lock it up. I also had a cable lock that attached the pistol case to the suitcase. The red "steal me" card was placed inside the suitcase by the way. He then took the suitcase (I was not allowed to touch it after it had been locked up) and me over to the TSA x-ray machine. I waited while it went though and when the TSA gave me the "all clear" I went to my boarding gate. All in all, it was a very quick and easy process. |
